although there was a man on the subway with a knife!!!! No one else bated an eyelid though!!!

that's the thing.. .he had a knife, but probably was just holding it... not harming or threatening anyone, so in new york, no one gives a crap...

you could have got off the car at one stop and jumped in the next one if you were really worried.... but in other cities, it would have been mayhem, blah blah blah...

proves a point that NYC is rather unique...

We stayed in the Big Apple Hostel in Times Square. It was cheap and cheerful. We stayed in a private room which was very basic but clean.

Personally though, I would recommend HOTWIRE anyday, you can get good hotels for $99 a night, and if you have half a brain on ya, you can work out which hotel you are going to get by looking on betterbidding.com, if you need some help, I will be more then willing to do some detective work for you, or anyone else who wants to go down this route, though to be aware, you can never be 100% about it.

Thank you, that would be great, I will check out Hotwire and betterbidding. I will definately need to be going down the cheapish road or really need to save. Just found out this morning that the £600 bonus we usually get in work end of August might be scrapped this year!!

Travelling on my own for about 10 nights around 5th - 15th September.. maybe 10th till 20th depending on what is cheapest for flights and hotels. As long as its a clean room with an ensuite and in an ok area.. prefer somewhere more like real New York, I do not want to stay in Times Square!

Okay, well it will be too expensive to book right now, but the closer you get, the cheaper it will be on there. You have plenty of time so I wouldn't rush into anything yet. If you decide you want to go down this route, I will help you nearer to the time.

http://www.quikbook.com/ is another website with some brilliant hotel sales.

    Hi all,
Newbie to this forum and looking for some advice. Found flights from Edin. through Delta in early June for 5 nights including 1 room at Sheraton New York & Towers. Going with oh and twin 15 year old sons. Total price £1905. Does this sound reasonable, never been before and read some reviews on hotel on Trip Adviser and sounds good. Ideally would like to fly from Glasgow but direct flights are almost £600 dearer.

mojy ... most people on here book flights and hotels separately, so to make it easier for us, it would be useful if you could tell us the flight cost per person, and then the hotel cost...

my guess, you're looking £350 ish for a flight each, plus then 5 nights in a hotel, so, £1050 for flights, giving £855, or £171 a night for a hotel, which isn't that much of a bargain IMO

Yep it was Thursday - spent most of yesterday in bed after drinking something called 'a dead poet' with 7 kinds of alcohol in :rolleyes:, but managed to get up in the evening for some cheesy dinner in times sq (I know Marky but you have to do it once!) and a visit to M and M world :D

It was pretty stormy yesterday but hoping for a bit of nicer weather today :D, off out to a Kentucky Derby party this evening :D

I am going to New York in December. I have been looking at the Intercontinetal friends and family offer. Got a hotel for £660 for 7 nights. Its in a good place, NYC MADISON SQUARE GARDEN would I get a better deal using priceline or one of the other types?

Also I am looking for flights, but they are around £330 at the moment. Not sure if they will get any cheaper? Any ideas.
