It sounds like you're doing the American double crochet (British treble) , and the book is presumably British? So the British double crochet doesn't start by yarn over hook.0

Doh! I have just comlpleted a whole bag in triple stitch. It looks ok but I just knew something wasn't quite right. Not to worry at least I know now

Where have you been to have only just missed the shruggie man smilie :rotfl: A few people have been upset by him and the rolleyes smilie, so we've all had them removed
Penny, xI manage a square thingy tonight, very small cos I haven't got the hang of cornering yet, so starting as a circle sounds good to me
I'll try and post a picture of my small square tomorrow if I remember!
Missed that about the smilles somewhere along the line, head has been in the sand for the last while, anyhoo......back to crochet.0 -
Hi All, this is going to sound like a really silly question but for a double crochet stitch I have been wrapping the yarn round then inserting into the stitch. I am sure this is right as I have been following the you tube videos, but have just got a book from the library 'Instant Expert' Crochet and it shows a double crochet without wrapping the yarn round first, am I going mad! I just thought I was getting the hang of things too:o0

The stitches are actually the same whether they are US or UK, it's only the names that are different. You can see them here.
It's fine to work fromUS instructions as long as you remember to change the name of the stitch in your head as you go along, but until you feel confident I'd stick to UK ones.Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
A useful tip for me if the crochet pattern is taken from a US site online is to copy and paste the pattern into a word document then use 'fine and replace' all the dc 's with treb etc as I would never remember otherwise.0

Need your opinion - I really fancy learning to crochet (I blame you guys and Attic24!) and theres a craft shop doing a beginners morning 9.30 - 1 with a cuppa included but its £30 which seems really steep to me. The details say that all materials are included and you get £5 voucher to use in the shop but £30 seems a lot to me but I guess you are paying for a person. I know there are lots of tutorials and videos to help but I was wondering if they are enough or do you need to see it in the flesh as I don't know anyone in the flesh who knows crochet to teach me!0

Bunny200, i learnt from an online tutorial last month never having tried to crochet before - would mean you had the money to spend on wool instead!0

I learned from Stich n B*tch. I think you can buy it for about £7.0

Yes, learn from a book, or Lucy's instructions on Attic24 are very graphic and clear.
My book (The Complete Encyclopaedia of Stitchcraft) arrived from Amazon today:j. Lots of browsing to do now.
