That's really lovely, Greenpixey. How long did she take you?

My sis taught me a couple of stitches when I was about 11 (early 70s) but she didn't know much about crochet herself, and tended to just make things out of her head, as she had no idea how to follow a pattern. She did make some lovely baby cardigans though. I made a baby cardi for my niece when I was about 12, that actually turned out OK for someone that didn't know what the different stitches were, and no pattern.

After all these years, I've still never learnt more that those two stitches (that didn't even have a name at the time). So, I decided last week that I'd get a book and see whether I could learn how to do it properly. I found an old book from the 60s on Ebay, and it arrived yesterday. From a browse through it last night, it appears that she taught me a treble stitch....And the other one was a double....But with an extra 'yarn over' right at the beginning....I'm not even sure if that's a proper stitch, as I can't find it in my book. Still, her cardis always turned out lovely, so I guess it didn't matter.

Anyway, I really hope that I can get to grips with it, and start making a few simple things. I have always loved the look of crochet, and envied people that could follow a pattern.
  • Thats ace green pixey!
Sorry to be a total pain, and I will be quiet once I get the hang of it! But! I am left handed, and have learned right handed, which I guess is why its taken a little longer, but I still cant sort out the whole tension thing. I cant get my head around wrapping the woll round my hand, and am basically pulling stitches over using my fingers, which isnt ideal. I started on teh scarf, and from the pics you can see the different sizes I have ended up with lol. Any easy tension tips would be appreciated. (I also used a slightly bigger hook as I only have 3!) I am not expecting to be an expert, and am loving the learning, but would like any tips on the whole wrap it round your hand thing before I go too far into doing it wrongly and having to relearn.
I am now grateful to penny penguin as I would never have done this before and its so relaxing and I feel like I am progressing a bit!

Well I can only crochet in the evenings when the boys gone to bed and I started Thursday last week, struggled 3 days with the hair... So I guess 3-4 days roughly 12hrs-15hrs give or take...
  • greenpixey, you did a fab job figuring that pattern out! Sorry I couldn't help either, I learnt to crochet by charts (Japanese/European way) so I am still bit slow on wordy patterns. I love the pixy ears!

jexygirl, the only thing I can advice about tension is practise. It took me about 3 medium size projects before I got my tensions under control. I know it's a pain right now, but it will become second nature soon!

Gazing on sunsets, thank you very much :) as far as I am concerned, granny squares are meant to be bright and clashing! I can't wait to see yours soon :)
  • Hi, I just wanted to say Thank You to Pink Numbers from me too. After reading all about curling granny squares I decided to unravel mine and the ones I have re-done using your method are MUCH better. A simple thing makes a big difference and I will be doing it that way in future. Kath

Hi, Well I am totally addicted and getting a bit better as I go along. Can someone point me to the post from Pink Numbers so I don't have wavy granny squares!

Also does anyone have a good pattern for slippers, Just simple ones. I am hoping these are going to make the bulk of my Christmas presents but need to start now LOL:rotfl:

Off to have a look at Ravelry. Thanks Julie

  • Hi all, Julie 67 if you click on Pink Numbers name (in blue on left side of her post) there is an option to view her homepage. If you look on there on right side under Labels at the very end is Tutorial and that shows the way to avoid wavy edges right at the bottom. Hope this helps, Kath
