  • Does anyone know of a video tutorial for granny squares, but an English one not American? I am just learning to crochet, I have the first issue of the new magazine and can now single, double and treble crochet :T but I really, really want to master the granny square now. I am not finding the written tutorials very easy, but the American videos use different names for the stitches which is confusing!
There must be an English one somewhere  but I can't find it......

DD & I have had a rethink, it doesn't matter if the booties don't match the bonnet - not now doing a bonnet am doing this
    http://www.knitting-crochet.com/crochet/snoflacap.html

Am making a practice one at the moment out of odd bits of wool to see how it turns out, may have to adapt the pattern to make it larger

Those booties are lovely Kazipoo, think I might use that pattern if I can work out how to make them a bit bigger.

Bizzylizzy - I know it doesn't help for a video tutorial but when I see a pattern I like that is american, I copy it into word and use the change and replace function ie ask it to find dc and replace with tr, mind you if there are a lot of different stitches you have to work out which order to change them.

    Hi all,

I am very interested in learning how to crochet. I have never done it before (or knitting) but I think I will pick it up quite quickly if I was shown. I have tried looking for adult education courses in my area and I can't seem to find one-is it rare to find a course on this?

I was tempted by the new magazine (as seen on TV) but I can't really see it as a great way to learn as I have never even picked up a needle (?is this even what you call it- LOL?)

How would you recommend I start to learn?
  • I have found the new magazine very helpful, they start from picking up the hook and go on from there. There is a DVD with the first issue to get you started. It is very clear. I would recommend it.
(This is from someone who 2 years ago ended up throwing her first attempts, plus hook, across the room .... and hasn't tried again since then - until now and now I can do single, double and treble stitches!!)

There are loads of great video tutorials on the web, but just be careful as many of them are American and they have different names for the same stitches.

If you are someone who can learn from a book just type in CROCHET on Amazon and there are hundreds, but again be careful to get a UK one.

The magazine looks good and is aimed at complete beginners so it might be a good idea to just get the first 2 or 3 issues to get you started - but beware, buying the whole series will set you back int he region of £300!

PS it's a HOOK by the way, not a needle!
Oh dear, here we go again.

I've been working on my stack of granny squares. The perfect project for snowbound days. I'm a bit apprehensive when the time comes for joining them though. I think I might find they're not all exactly the same size:o

Have you tried joining as you go  That's what I'm doing with my scarf - fiddly but neat (in both senses ;) )

I thought about that Penny but my squares are all different and it'll take me a while to decide on the best arrangement. I'm making 96 and have done 40 so far.

Lucy of Attic24 has been very quiet lately, wonder if her baby has arrived. Hope she's OK.
