I found this very basic, but really good tutorial on Ravelry for Granny Squares. Hope it helps someone! I clicked on the UK version as that's how I learned.
Sorry, you'll have to copy and paste as my computer won't play tonight.

    Well done you.
Now to tweak it!! Actually make another and another and they will improve with practice and the tension will become regular.
    Love the colours.

My question is how many stitches do you have per side on the last row? because it looks to me as if you just may be increasing the number of stitches when you join. It also looks as if (by a quick count!) you don't have the same number of stitches on the other three sides, so the square will become skewiff...... but it is a start, and that is the main thing.
I often join new colour near a corner

I've just realised it is not the usual granny square- that is built up with blocks of 3 trebles

I'm looking at the very first round- one corner hole is very large and that will influence all the other rounds. Try to get the first "round" even......
For a first attempt that is great

    Onwards and upwards!!!!

    Hi Katie

    Thank you for that!

I actually did notice that the last row seems to be longer than the other three, but I wasn't sure why!

I've did another three squares now, so I'll pop a picture on of the last one and see what you think.

Oh and I know it's not the granny square with the trebles, I wanted to do the solid ones?

    Thanks!

That looks very much better- hey, improving all the time. Honestly you are the person with the square in front of you so just check that every side , on every row does have the same number of stitches- when you start (to crotchet) it is so easy to make an extra stitch!
If you think it is square you can pin it out and lightly press it- refer to the yarn band for steam or not, iron temp etc. Generally when you block things they look much better but if you are not careful you can lose the texture!
    Congratulations!
    ;):T;)
Just be very careful where you join because that is the spot you are very likely to make an extra stitch ..or two. You shouldn't be able to see the join, and in yours they are still visible. Check how you are joining at the top of the 3 chain (which stands for the first treble)...it's just not quite right..but it's coming

Thankyou Katiehound. I'm really grateful for your advice.

I have to admit I find the joining at the top of the chain 3 the hardest part! lol

I'll keep trying as I love that wiggle cushion that was posted in a tutorial earlier in this post, but that's a long way off I suspect! lol

    Hi SallyUK

You have done a fantastic job with your squares - Well done :T:T

I would agree with the advice from Katie. Things often look better after being 'pressed'. I don't let the iron touch the wool though, I just steam above the square, after pinning it out on an old chair pad.

I noticed when you made your first round, the 3 chains (for the first treble) are in the corner. It might help figure it out if you try to make sure that in each round, when you get to the last side, you know that the 3 chains are the very first stitch. So you would do the final treble on the 4th side, then the chains to make the hole in the corner, then slip stitch into the top of the 3 chains to join up.
Then, to start your next row, you do your 3 chains, make your next treble into the bottom of the chains for your increase stitch, then your next one in the next treble from the previous round.
Hope this helps. Keep going! You'll become better each time. :)

I still think the joins look a bit obvious but don't know what to suggest as I tend to be a hands on type of person... in other words I would try out different strategies. I'm thinking that if you joined nearer a corner it wouldn't be so noticeable. You also don't need to join in exactly the same place for each round. Now I look 'though is each round a different colour? or is it shaded yarn? If the latter then obviously you don't get a cxhoice where to join!!
Other than that it's looking very good. That's a huge improvement.Keep the first square, at the moment, to remind yourself how much you have improved and then I would pull the others down and do them again! Don't waste your expensive yarn.

    Well done :j
