Thanks Mrs_T_M. Am already joined up to Ravelry, I couldn't see anything for crochet that I fancied so have swapped from crochet over to knitting for baby gifts because I was finding the thin yarn and tiny crochet hooks difficult as a newbie. Found easy booties which I have knitted up and am now onto a fairly simple baby cardigan.

Oh, you are all so clever!!

I have, at the age of 62 and retired, a bit more time on my hands than when I was working. There are a few things I have never mastered in life, swimming, riding a bike and how to crochet.

I can knit and am determined I will learn to crochet (the other things can wait).

Using a mixture of books and YouTube, I think I have come quite far this weekend but have one or two queries which maybe someone can help me with.

I have to stick to UK instructions as can't get my head round the differences.

I can't seem to get on with wool as it is too furry and I find it hard, at least at the moment, to see the stitches. I am now using cotton and it is better. I have tackled double crochet and triple but am confused as to whether, when working a row of stitches, you should go through the top loop only or through both loops of the stitches from the row below? Instructions seem to be conflicting.

There will probably be more questions but I would be grateful if someone could answer that one for me first. Thanks.

Hi whitesatin, i'm in no way an expert but I believe if you go through both loops it just regular stitching but if you go through 1 loop ie FLO (front loop only) or BLO (back loop only) then you'll get a ribbed effect. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon :)

Thanks, nmm, that makes some sense. There is so much to learn compared to knitting, so many stitches and patterns. But I will do it!

    Great to have your help.

Absolutely go through both loops-unless told otherwise!
When I started to crotchet my downfall was turning at the end of a row- the rows got shorter and shorter !That was before the days of you-tube...luckily I found someone to show me.
In time I think you will find crotchet to be easier. You only have one stitch to drop instead of a whole row! and it grows quickly. I would far rather crotchet than knit but they both have their place.

Good luck and keep practising. Lots of cute things can be crotcheted very quickly think of flowers etc.

I've just spent another few hours trying to learn today but find that nothing else is getting done. Luckily it is raining so I don't feel too guilty about the garden not getting done but I do have a large family gathering here this Sunday and really should be planning for that. The craft/playroom is in a state and I want to get that straight so that the four children can keep themselves busy after lunch but it is such a mess I don't know where to start.

But, still, I keep on crocheting.......I am now the proud owner of my first ever piece of crochet. I was practising working in a round, in lime green wool and ended up with a piece just large enough to go round an empty glass candle jar which is now being used to keep pens in. If you don't look too closely, it looks fine, lol.

Good luck with your deep house clean (oh no! that's something else I should be doing!) and hope you get back to your crochet soon.

I've just made my first granny square. I can see one error in it but I am quite pleased now that I get the principle. Once again, I could sit here all day doing this but I won't as I have a lot to do today. Maybe get back to it later.

This is a tutorial I found easy to follow:

Funny how some tutorials just click!

I learned to crochet in american terms, and still prefer american terms, but i couldnt for the life of me, get a granny square, no matter what i done. Then after buying a Lets crochet , they had a pattern for a qranny square, and i just got it. No idea why i got this one, in uk terms when i dont crochet in uk terms , buti did. really strange. lol
