Deramores website sells almost every brand/type of wool and in the description it includes the length in metres per ball.

Have you seen these crochet hooks from that site? http://www.deramores.com/knit-pro-symfonie-wood-crochet-hook-set

    Gorgeous!

Any experts out there? I can do the first row of double crochet, get to the end turn it and do the turning chain, but I just can't start the next row off. You know where you have to start putting the hook through the top two stitches (I think I've worked this out) but the hook just won't go through, it's too tight. I've tried doing everything loosely but once I get to this stage it's just to too tight to go through :( Any suggestions?

Your turning chain for double crochet is usually 3 or 4. Thats 3 or 4 chains when you finish the last row. This chain works as your first stitch in the next row so you should be starting on the second stitch of the new row not the first .. hope this makes sense
That could be why it is so tight
I use paper clips at the end of a row to mark the chain I need to stitch into at the end of each row. It stops the crochet from growing and keeps a straight edge when I come back to it
Have a practice with a few squares and please , please always do a tester square for tension before you start , it will save you loads of grief in the long run.

PS I am no expert . I have started crocheting after a 25 year gap and my first attempt was pathetic , more like fishing net ;)

Whilst on holiday last week I re-taught myself how to crochet, having not done any for about 30 years! I am now doing granny squares in a lovely yarn which is in shades of pink, mauve, cream and grey (Crofter). I am making a cot blanket for my grandaughter. I have tried sewing the squares together but I am not entirely satisfied with the result.

I am thinking it might be nice to pick out one of the shades and crochet the squares together plus crochet an edging. Any suggestions as the best way to do this? Do I just chain stitch the squares together?

That is what I would do:

Lucy did a blog piece on it on Attic24 http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/joining-granny-sqaures.html I've made some slippers joining granny squares up this way, they looked quite cool and Scandinavian.

Edit: does any one know what yarn Lucy uses in her projects? The colours are always so vibrant!

I have just taken stock of 30 balls of DK from spinningwheel1989 on ebay. Very swift and reasonable price too. It's Robin.

I was thinking of a more decorative edge. I am sure I saw one somewhere when I googled it! Thanks for your quick reply.

If you find anything would you post it? I wouldn't mind learning a more decorative edge myself :)

I got it from the Encycolpedia of Crochet Techniques. It's a book I bought a little while ago but used the other day for the first time.
