    Any experts out there? I can do the first row of double crochet, get to the end turn it and do the turning chain, but I just can't start the next row off. You know where you have to start putting the hook through the top two stitches (I think I've worked this out) but the hook just won't go through, it's too tight. I've tried doing everything loosely but once I get to this stage it's just to too tight to go through :( Any suggestions?

    I'm no expert, but could you practise with some wool and a bigger hook until you get the hang of it? It took me ages to figure it out as well, but once it clicks there'll be no stopping you :)
    Are you trying to go through the top of the stitch on the previous row? I put the hook sort of between the last stitch and the second one rather than through the top of the stitch IYSWIM.

    Have you looked on You Tube? There's usually a tutorial for anything you might need. HTH :)

    Hi artydoll, bankets and throws are a great winter project as they keep you warm as you make them :)

    I've just restarted some crochet for Christmas projects, I'm making star garlands and crocheted flower hair clips for my niece. I would like to be able to make an amazing blanket one day but I am not very good at larger projects. I love making granny squares but can never sew them together - need to practice that more!

    Hi,
    My daughter is coveting this hat

    http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores
    /servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=21&vi
    ewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556
    &productId=7328721&langId=-1&sort_field=
    Relevance&categoryId=208549&parent_categ
    oryId=204484&pageSize=20

    I'm sure one could be made for a fraction of the price. However, it is years since I attempted crochet, so need to be classed as an absolute beginner. Can anyone tell me what the stitch is and/or point me in the direction of a pattern for a similar hat?

    TIA
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

    It's a bit expensive for what it is isn't it?! The details of the hat say that it is knitted, not crocheted.

    However this one looks like it could have a similar sort of pattern (it's not the best photo though!) http://crochet.about.com/od/easy-crochet-patterns/a/simple-crochet-beanie-hat-pattern.htm

    It would be easy enough to sew a pom-pom onto it.
  • I've stumbled across this thread, apologies if this has already been said, I have lots to catch up on

    for beginners, the chain and first row are by far the worst; if you can find someone to start you off, it would be a good idea

    If doing it yourself, use a larger hook for the chain then swap to the normal hook, say at least a 6 for chain, then drop to 5.5

    You can practice doing it really, really loosely at first, until you can see where you are meant to go
    You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

    Thank you Justamum.

    Yes, I thought £14 was rather over the top.

    That pattern looks possible (and I note the easy level :)). If I start now she might get it for Christmas :D.

    She has taken a fancy to a cable knit one too - I think that would be beyond me :o.

    The pattern does use American stitches - their single crochet is our double - just so you don't end up getting frustrated with it!

    You can do cable patterns with crochet too. I've got a couple of jumper patterns which I bought years ago which are cable crochet. Not got round to making them though :o

    These are a couple of head bands and wrist warmers that my dd has crochet for her nieces. She learnt to crochet watching youtube tutorials. They have little buttons fastenings.
