lilmiss...joining up squares is not a favourite of mine! Your blanket is looking good tho.
Fluffies...your crochet is lovely. Those little boots are so cute, and the black and white scarf is very posh and the cowl is going to be just the ticket for winter.

lilmiss - if you want a more textured finish to your blanket, you could crochet the squares together. Hold both squares wrong sides together, then put your hook through the top of both squares as though you were going to do double crochet along the top edge. Then work double crochet along the length of the squares and when you get to the end, hold another 2 squares together and carry on until you reach the length you want. Do the same across the other way.

  • where's the best place to buy crochet hooks and yarn? I've looked in Wilkinsons and Home Bargains but couldn't find anything.

    :)
  • If you have a Mary Stevens Hospice shop near you, they sell some lovely yarn in bright colours.

Ebay sell crochet hooks at good prices.
  • I think the Mary Stevens Hospice shops are only in the Midlands ...

I've been reading the horror stories about ebay on the board on here, but I will take a look, thanks :D

Are you a beginner or a seasoned professional?

I picked up a new magazine today, a learn to crochet one, had a free hook and two balls of yarn with it for 99p, comes with a DVD as well but I've not watched it yet.

I'm a total novice though, thought it might help :)
Can't think of anything smart to put here...

Hobbycraft sell hooks and wool-or John Lewis's. Our local branch of Wilkinsons sells wool but it's tucked away with things like clothes pegs and cleaning stuff for some reason.

It's always worth asking in charity shops if they have hooks.I work in a charity shop and we keep knitting needles, crochet hooks and wool-if we have any-in the back .

i got a set of bling ones on ebay for about £2 which are excellent. like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-pcs-set-of-colourful-durable-aluminium-crochet-hooks-UK-SELLER-FAST-DELIVERY-/200714925437?pt=UK_Crafts_Knitting_Crochet_EH&hash=item2ebb8ab57d All the ones that i buy from knitting shops for £1 each keep snapping on me.

I've got the same one :D I seem to be doing okay with it, but felt I'd do better with a larger size hook as my chains seem too small to work with as I'm a novice too - I couldn't really tell where I was going wrong.

p.s In the 'Getting Started' book, Step 5 - I'm sure there's a step missing on that page. I ended up resorting to YouTube videos and found that I had to draw the yarn back through the first hoop, then two together (not just the two in one go as it says). It could be me reading it wrong though ...
Haven't tried the DVD yet either.

I'll check where my local hobbycraft is (I've never been in one! I think I'm missing out) I will try charity shops too, thanks.

Ooh, thank you for the link :)
  • Is there a Poundstretchers store near to where you live? They sell knitting yarn.
