How many squares of 4 round granny squares will I need for a single bed sized blanket?

If you let me know what one of your squares measure, I will have a go a working it out for you. Also, how much of the bed do you want it to cover, from top to bottom, and how much overhang at the sides?

I prefer to leave it till they are all done then I can have a play about with how I set them out. I don't sew the ends in after each square but usually wait till I've got 3 or 4 and do them then.
I wish there was some amazing invention which dealt with the ends, it's my least favourite bit.

With the three granny square blankets I have made, I have always completed all the squares first. I lay them all out on the floor as I go along (they have all been double bed size, so quite large) so that I get the right size, design and/or colour sequence. After that I join each long row of squares by crocheting them together, so I end up with a lot of long strips of squares if you see what I mean. I then join all the long strips together. After that it's onto the border..... :) I just wish I could [STRIKE]be bothered[/STRIKE] remember to sew all the ends in as I go along

I'm sure others will do it differently, but that is how I have done it so far, and hope it helps you to decide.

That's the way I do it too as I don't start with a specific pattern in mind.

I have just finished sewing in all the ends of my Granny Stripe blanket, what a chore that is!! I am very pleased with the finished result though, and am glad I followed Lucy's colour choice.

Yesterday I started on my very first ripple pattern, which (now I've got the hang of it!) is quite simple and enjoyable to do. I found the tricky part was the first row, but once I had mastered that, after several attempts, it just seems to ripple along nicely. I did do a small sample piece with 28+3 chain to practice with and to master how to do it, so if you are going to give the ripple pattern a go, I would certainly recommend a small piece first.

Here are some more photos, you should be able to see larger versions if you click on the small photos.

missmilly that blanket is gorgeous!! I have always wanted to crochet a blanket but never actually got around to it but you have inspired me!

I ordered the pack of wool from Masons and it arrived today and I am just raring to get started.

Can I ask how long was your starting chain? I see from the pattern that it should be a multiple of 3.

    Thank you for the inspiration.

Hello and thank you for your lovely comments :)

My starting chain was 240 and it seemed to go on forever!! I had never started anything with such a long chain before. If you go to the bottom of this page it gives you a few more details of the blanket.

I hope you enjoy making it, as much as I did.

Thank you for that and the link! Can't wait to get started tomorrow night!!

I've only ever crocheted small items before so this will be a challenge for me! I also have a bad habit of starting things and not finishing them but I'm determined to do this as it's so lovely and well worth all the effort.

Will post a pic when I finish but it may take me until this time next year lol!!

Quick tip - I always add a few extra chains on large items especially if it's something where you have to put more than one stitch into a chain. It's easy to undo the extra ones at the end and saves unraveling the lot as when you check back the mistake is nearly always at the beginning.

  • MissMilly what a gorgeous blanket, great choice of colours. I've been an avid crocheter for a long time, I learnt as a child from an elderly neighbour of ours.

I've made lots of things over the years; blankets, bootties, hats, bibs, bags and cardigans. Mr Pink has often commented he can see me sitting on the front porch of our house, in a rocking chair, crocheting. :rotfl:

I haven't managed to read the entire thread yet but will subscribe and read more later.
