Or if you prefer line drawings there is quite a good link here from Australia crochet I've recommended to people with instructions for left and right handers...
Try with a moderate to thick hook and cheap DK or whatever you have in your stash to start off with....Ebay does quite good multi coloured sets for about £5 or so (if I recall rightly) which you just need a clear pencil case to keep them in (99p from Mr JL).....
Hope that helps

Just thought I'd pop on and say hello,
I've been reading your posts and going through the photographs of the lovely creations you've all been making and have found it very inspirational.
I've never done crochet before and plan to use some of the tutorials on youtube (technology is fab) to get started and hopefully learn to read a pattern. I've ordered a couple from ebay which are bags to have a go at when I'm confident with small squares and things. I'm guessing that this is the best way to start with the granny squares, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
We have a craft fair near Christmas so my aim is to try and improve in time to make enough things for the fair and also to make things for around the house.0 -

I am a knitter but I would love to learn to crochet, I have tried books everything just cannot seem to grasp it can any recommend the best tutorials or way to learn as I really really want to learn and could I just ask how long did it take you to do each blanket?
Thank you
This latest blanket, I was doing one square a night. I have just checked back on my posts and I started it on 31 October. I travel down to London with work quite a bit so managed to do a fair few squares on the train. I just decided it was going to be variations on blue but didn't have any firm size or pattern in my head. I kept it more interesting by using a different wool each time I started a new square. I just kept laying the squares on the floor until I was happy with the size.
I too was a prolific knitter but in the past when I had tried crochetting I couldn't get away with it. I still haven't attempted anything difficult from a proper pattern but I would like to try making a hat for myself. The navy sparkly wool that I used in this blanket would lend itself well to a nice beret (although I imagine that it would be a pig to do as I find it harder working with dark wool.)Ditch 100 in January Challenge 100/100

I finiished a granny cushion the other day, and even went to back it, but I thought it will never go anywhere in the house and get used so Im turning it into a blanket!!!!!!:rotfl:
All the squares have been crocheted togeither, so I have started going around the edge in first double chain and now in trebles, each round is a different colour so far but will have to start duplicating colours soon, anyway off to have a shower etc etc

Spent the evening on the first stage of tutorial - making the initial chain.
I've started to get there I think as they're becoming more like the ones on the videos, my main trouble seems to be the tension, when you hold the chain with your thumb and middle finger I keep pulling it which results in a very tight chain rather than the loose type so I'm practising that again today to get a uniformed size/shape before I go onto the next stage0 -

I did the first chain over and over and over again for a week until I got the tension right. Find a way which works for you, I found that holding the chain loosely stops me from making it too tight.
Also, I have found that changing the way I hold the yarn helps me loads. I not totally ignore the 'proper' way and use the yarn like I am knitting rather than holding it still
Well done for getting this far .... keep at it, you will master it :T2012 wins approx £11,000 including 5k to spend on a holiday :j0 -
Your tension will even out as you gain experience and start to relax more.
Try not to think too much about it, maybe do something simple whilst watching your favourite programme.
You will get there in the end14 Projects in 2014 - in memory of Soulie - 2/140
