Many thanks, Kit, though I just can't seem to find a comfortable way, but maybe..with patience I'll get onto a 3rd row after about as many months.

    Thanks again.

  • I have only just taken up crochet properly just recently - in the past I was a proliffic knitter (and cross stitcher) but couldn't get away with crochet previously.

I am left handed which doesn't help but the best book that I found was Crochet Unravelled which shows clear pictures for both lefties and righties. I found that I was wrapping the wool round my little finger the wrong way so now that I have it the right way, it flows well. I also pull the wool out of the ball every so often so there is no tension on the wool when working.

I love the stuff you've made missmilly, especially the round cushion, I'd love to do that myself but can't find it on the attic24's website, can you provide a link please?

    thanks :)

Hi everyone, its been such a long time since i last posted so thought i'll give you all an update on what i've been up to! Also not sure if you guys are aware but Deramores online has a 10% off code at the moment (Rav2011) and 5% cashback, also if you buy 9 balls the 10th ball is free also. Free 1st class delivery after £20. So... i've just ordered some more wool for my next project! :o Told DH this can be his Christmas gift to me! Forget handbags give me wool any day lol!

Well i've been busy crocheting lots of blankets as my sister placed 2 orders for baby boy blankets which i still need to complete. The crocheting is done i just need to borrow MIL sewing machine to line the back of the blanket with some nice cotton material. I have made and finished a throw for DS's bed, now DD and DS have one each. I also made DD a doll's blanket a while ago but haven't had the chance to post the pics so here they are!

Aha..thank you so very much indeed, mavisangelica! It may be the little finger problem with me, but that book sounds very helpful too. Ver may thanks!

Any tips anyone? Or am I beyond them!

missmilley, your work is absolutely gorgeous..and here's me with my 2 lines...how do you rate my chances of getting anywhere near your standards????? :rotfl:

    Sue...perplexed :(

Thank you Sue, I only started to crochet a couple of years ago, before that I just couldn't get the hang of it either, so you are not alone! I started again by making squares, squares and even more squares. I ended up with hundreds of the pesky things which were then assembled to make my very first blanket, yet to be photographed though.

I was so used to knitting that it seemed totally alien to me to be holding the yarn in my other hand, I am right handed, so I needed to hold it in my left hand, I just kept on trying and trying with lots of different ways until it became almost second nature. I'm still not sure that I am doing it the correct way, but it works for me.

My sister has recently started to crochet too, she can't get the hang of holding the wool in her other hand either, so she is right handed and holds the wool in her right hand as if she were knitting!!! It does look really odd, but it works for her.

I don't know if you have had a chance to look at Lucy's blog at Attic24 but she does give very clear and simple instructions complete with lots of close-up photographs which I find really helpful.

Keep at it...............it will come and you shall have your finished blanket too :)

Sue-UU keep at it! You will get the hand of it i promise! When i first started (spring time this year) i didn't have a clue how to hold the wool or hold the hook properly! But eventually it came naturally to me even though at first my tension was all wrong! It will take time and patients i know i had to give it A LOT of patients! Lol! I would of suggested watching some videos on Youtube but i am sure you said you have already watched some videos. Everyone holds their wool differently this is how i hold mine. Hook in right hand, with your left hand wrap wool over the top of my index finger, the rest of the wool under the rest of the other fingers. The ring and baby will hold the wool to give the tension and the thumb and middle finger will be used to hold on to my work under the hook to control what i am doing. I really hope this makes sense? If not, i can take a picture of how i hold my wool and hook to give you a better idea if you like? Anyways, hope it works out for you and good luck! :)

Oh bless you both, missmilly and Amy82. Thank you BOTH for all that you've written, it's really made me feel that I will master it and I'm determined too as I miss my knitting so much, but just can't work with the right hand (I'm right handed).

I love the way you've explained how to use the wool and hook, Amy82! I have YouTube videos, but they go too fast and even with rewinding no end of time at the crucial time it I just can't watch and work at the same time.

Now if THEY worked at my speed I'd be ok! ;) I now have a Clover hook so will see if it helps too, though it feels more like plastic than the advertised "rubber feeling"!

I've knitted some lovely things, especially a pram blanket embroidered with flowers and leaves, but at that time, 17 years ago never had a camera!!! :( I will see if my DD still has it..though after 5 Grandkiddies!!!

VERY many thanks indeed to you both, I so appreciate your kindness - and to know you only started this spring, Amy is incredible!!!

I'm off to have a shot right now!

    Thanks again, Sue xxx

Ami, you projects are fab :D

I have given up on my ripple, I think it is the decreasing stitch that I haven't got the hang of. I'm going to do Lucy's granny stripe blanket too now.

I'm another one who doesn't hold her wool correctly. I was really frustrated by it and it held up my progress for sure. In the end I gave up trying to copy the right way and concentrated on the stitches. My fingers soon worked out how they needed to hold the wool me to be able to do the stitches :) Mine kind of just sits over my finger with the next finger touching it slighly. I seem to have learned how to apply just the right amount tension. It's bizarre how the more you practise, the more you fingers and brain just get it. If you keep at it, soon you'll be doing things without really thinking about it :)
