Am loving the fish!!! I can see the same thing, with a handle/pair of shorter handles, as a goodie bag for toddlers.....filled with sweeties or little toys, the perfect gift for girls and boys.

Am a poet, as well as a kitchen alchemist ;)

I am liking this idea! Dd couldn't wait until xmas for the hat so I need to come up with something else as a surprise for her.

I am now making an owl hat for ds.

keep going with the squares Suzy as it will all come together. It took me a couple of attempts to finally 'get' how to crochet but it just clicked one day.

55 squares in 3 days is fantastic Jessie! I have not been brave enough to attempt a blanket yet as I tend to get impatient and want to see the final item quickly, hence my liking of amigurumi.

Mug hug is on my ideas list for xmas gifts, seen any nice patterns? :D

I am also hoping to find some of the light up crochet hooks so if anyone knows where to get them please let me know :)

I'm currently making a blanket from a cone of black fingering weight yarn bought for 25p at the jumble.
I started off making a shawl to this chart http://0.tqn.com/d/crochet/1/0/j/q/cnhrtstrshawlcht.JPG but as I am using fingering weight yarn, to get nice neat squares I needed to use a 3.5mm hook. the pattern calls for worsted or DK weight yarn and a 6mm hook lol... so I've decided to make 4 of them, sew them together, edge them and make a blanket.
I claimed after taking a year to finish this (from a cone of white cotton fingering weight yarn bought for 10p): http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=369818.0 I'd never do Filet again... but then I had some of that nearly free white cotton yarn left so I made this for my mum: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=375426.0

and then claimed again "I'm never doing Filet again!".... ahem. oh well lol.

here's a picture of a bacon scarf to make you smile. it was my brother's xmas pressie last year. freestyle crochet to get the crinkly bacon effect. everything's better wrapped in bacon.

  • Flibsey I love the bacon scarf! The projects you linked to are amazing, I have so many started and unfinished projects that are simple in comparison so I really admire your dedication :)

What is the fingering weight you mention? I have loads of cones of yarn I picked up cheap and haven't decided what to do with them yet - I think they were 2 ply. ( excuse my yarn ignorance, I just tend to make do with what yarn I have available or find in the charity shops and very rarely buy the specified yarn stated in patterns :o )

Well done on the squares Suzy, would love to see the finished blanket.
  • how did you make the fish hat, is it a pattern or from your imagination

i love it. i'm not up to doing it yet. i've only just learnt how to do chain, double and treble to say it's not coming naturally to me is an understatment!

i've been struggling over a sampler type thing but i'm getting a bit bored

is there anything i could make that is basic with just those 3 sticthes in?

  • sorry I should have linked to the fish hat pattern - http://westcoastsupernatural.wordpress.com/ there are a couple of others out there but I found this the easiest to follow and it was free :)

one of the first practice patterns I did was a simple hat on YouTube -basic repetitive stitches that I could pause rewind and play again :D

this was the first one I followed http://www.youtube.com/user/tjw1963#p/search/1/EoCRUObS0Tc

You can make lots with basic stitches. Scarfs, hats, flowers, stars .... google for patterns. You will be surprised what you can do with basic stitches :)

there a few other free ones on ravelry and if search on crochet pattern central they have a few patterns there aswell :)

hope nobody minds me bombarding the thread today but I am at home with a poorly little one camped out on the sofa. Should really log off and do some crochet!

Many thanks for your encouragement, I have managed to do ten squares so far. They are white, pale blue and navy. They size of them is four rounds, the only problem is that it is DK wool, and I am using a 6mm hook, so are not as thick if I had used the correct one. I read somewhere - maybe on here - it is easier to learn with a bigger hook, and certainly I have found that has helped. Will maybe look at doing the hot water bottle cover above, to match and keep the pink one I have done already.
