Double knit or 4 ply wool is good. I would avoid £1 wool from pound shops etc to start with. Aim for £3 to £5. Kemp Wool Shop is a great place to buy wool ... check out their clearance section (and try not to spend too much .... I tend to spend loads!).2012 wins approx £11,000 including 5k to spend on a holiday :j0

Thank you all so very much for your advice which is much appreciated. I have DK wool and we have Wilkos, so no problem there, but will certainly steer clear of poundland. I still have DK left over from my knitting days, but can't wait to get started on crochet!
I'm going to try a Granny Square to start with....and a prayer!
Many thanks again girls and I'll let you know how I get on.

When i was a teenager i crochetted a granny blanket for my Mum to put on her legs when she was watching the telly. She kept it for years and years and she used it regularly. I didnt use granny squares though i just went round and round until it was big enough.
Recently i have been looking to purchase a bedspread for the colder winter months and have been appalled at the price of them. I thought of buying a throw but since i want to tuck the ends under the mattress it would have to be quite large and they do seem to be a standard size.
So then i looked on Ebay for crochetted blankets. Theres some really nice ones on there, expensive (but at least they are handmade) but unfortunately i dont like the colours. I am litterally kicking myself now because i cant remember how to crochet and to be honest, i dont know if ive got the patience if i get stuck.
I dont know anyone who crochets who could help me and it would be like starting from scratch again :-(.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hello, Newbie here (I lie; actually I'm a rather oldie!)
Love the thread. I've been crochet-ing (how do you pronounce that word?) for many years. And a Money-Saver forever.
Combining the two, I had to buy some bright green wool to knit (sorry) new handlebar covers for my exercise bike (don't ask!) I only needed a bit of the 100g ball so to use up the leftovers I started to crochet a scarf for DD2. But I ran out before it was decently long enough. So I had to buy another 100g.
So to use up the leftovers I started a pair of flip-top mitts for DSis-i-law. But I ran out inches before the end of the second one. So I had to buy another 100g!
So to use up the leftovers, nearly enough for a pair of mitts - any ideas? ! !0 -
Stripes? with another colour? If you don't have another colour, try and find a small amount of a different colour in a charity shop?2012 wins approx £11,000 including 5k to spend on a holiday :j0

Hello there! Have been reading through this thread over the past couple of days and am feeling very inspired!
Was in WhSmith today and they'd just put out the first part of 'The Art of Crochet' which has been reprinted. Thought it may be of interest to some who are new to crochet. Only 99p for the first mag and it has two small balls of wool and a hook to start you off! It also has a DVD with some of the basics.
Next week it's up to £1.99 and the £2.99 thereafter so could get kind of expensive but might be worth buying the first couple?!

Well I am totally new to crochet and am teaching myself from a book and You Tube, I have mastered making a chain, double and treble crochet and have made a cushion out of double crochet and I am really pleased with it, so last night I decided to try my first granny square, I made 9 squares last night, each one with three different colours in it. I am so pleased..... Now do you think its possible to make a lap blanket in time for Christmas? I know my mum would love one. Also what would look best? all different squares or do some kind of pattern?
I cant believe i can crochet, I have tried a couple of times but never mastered it until now, no one in my family does it so I had no one to show me how, I am really pleased with myself!0
