Another problem I'm having is that I'm obviously getting my tension far too tight so need to try to get that better, any tips would be very much appreciated?

I had this problem too to start with (I'm still just a beginner). The best way round it for me was to start off using a bigger hook. Double knitting usually uses a 4mm hook, so I used a 5mm; it's much easier to keep it looser, and to see the stitches properly:)
You could go bigger still, the results still look fine.
    Hth.
  • My fav hook size is 5.5mm It's great for beginners as it is big enough to see the stitches but not too big in your hand. I have hooks from tiny for lace to our size 20 mm .
If its blankets or toys use any sized hook u are comfortable with that let's u have easy access into the stitches. Nothing worse that big hook n flimsy stitches that u have to constantly fix n twist .

So far I have done 3 squares. I'm just not in the mood to be doing this just now.
I didn't bring my dinosaurs wool n pattern or I'd have a start at it.

Thank you so very much, Justamum! I've bookmarked both and written them down for safe-keeping.

Thanks so much, Diflower, I was using a 4mm so will wait now to get a 5 mm, thank you! I'm also using DK so it sounds as though it'll be the best size.

Thank you too, LolaLemon, a blanket (babies) is what I'm attempting, after lots of practice, though it may yet turn out to be used as an oily rag for DH...or a carpet!!! :D

Thank you so very, very much indeed, ladies, I'm so grateful to you ALL. No doubt I'll be back for more advice...or maybe you'd already guessed that much. ;)

Good luck in finding it, FarmersWife.

    Have a lovely weekend.

  • Hi everyone. I have'nt been back to this thread for ages as I have been trying to do more actual crochet rather than just look for patterns.

It's great to see so many people taking up crochet - warning it is very addictive! :D

I am too scared to write down a full list of planned xmas makes, I never complete everything I plan to do but I must keep going! I have been making progress and just had to share what I completed for DD this week as it has been one of my favourite projects so far. It's a crochet fish hat:

I love the fish hat :D

Currently I am in the middle of making bunting and a wee selection of egg cozies (yes I know who really uses them :rotfl:) from the book Cute and Easy Crochet which is lovely and the patterns are really easy to follow.

My next project is going to be a mug hug :)

  • Am loving the fish!!! I can see the same thing, with a handle/pair of shorter handles, as a goodie bag for toddlers.....filled with sweeties or little toys, the perfect gift for girls and boys.

Loving reading about all your makes, just attempting doing granny squares - but the are ending up circles! I think I must be increasing too often! Hot water bottle cover finished for a christmas pressie - very basic but still quite pretty, lovely pink and white stripes.
Will get the housework done and have a couple of hours this afternoon trying granny squares again!
