  • I didn't use a pattern (apart from seeing someone elses on here. I decided on my colours first then made 6 basic granny squares - in two different colourways (ie 3 of each.) I did 2 rows (rounds?) of each colour. But instead of just making one at a time I worked on all 6 so that if I got sick I could make them into something else.

I just kept laying them on the floor until they all came to about the size I wanted. I then finished each one with 2 rows of the navy. I decided on the navy so that it wouldn't show up the seam as much.

I then sewed (crocheted) them all together and then did 3 rows of navy right the way round the outside.

The wool I used was just cheap acrylic so it is a bit stretchy - I already had the navy (from Poundstretchers years ago). and then bought the white and pink from Wilkos. I think I used 3 or 4 navy and just over 2 of the white and pink.

Well it looks lovely, hope I can do something similar one day. What stitch is this?
  • It's treble.
Make 6 chain then join with a slip stitch.
Round 1 - 3 chain (to count as first treble) then work into circle and not the individual stitches, work 2 treble, 2 chain (3 treble, 2 chain) 3 times. Join with a slip stitch to 3rd chain.
Round 2 - 2 chain (3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) into first chain space to form a corner. *1chain (3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) into next 2 chain space. Repeat from * twice more. join with a slip stitch to the first of the two chains at beginning of round.
Round 3 - 3 chain to count as first treble. Work 2 treble into first chain space to the left of the slip stitch of previous round. 1 chain *(3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) into 2 chain space. 1 chain, 3 treble into 1 chain space, 1 chain and repeated from * twice more. (3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) into last chain space. 1 chain and then join with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the first chain of the round.
Round 4 - 2 chain, 3 treble into next 1 chain space. 1 chain. *(3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) into 2 chain space. 1 chain. (3 treble into next 1 chain space, 1 chain) twice. Repeat from * twice more. (3 treble, 2 chain, 3 treble) into last 2 chain space. 1 chain, 3 treble into last chain space. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain of the round.
Then repeat rounds 3 and 4 to the desired size.

Basically the principle is you do 3 treble into one chain space then do 1 chain between. When you come to a corner you do 3 treble then TWO chain then 3 treble in the same corner hole to form a new corner.

It is easy although it looks complicated on paper. Best advice I was given was look at youtube and watch someone demonstrate. But Granny Squares are the best thing for a beginner to start (I think).

  • I cannot post pics and it is vexing me

I don't have a Flikr-y-type account, just photos on my PC....JPEGs....no matter how small I paste the pic it says that there are too many characters in my post
  • I created a photobucket account just for this forum. Took 2 minutes and was easy enough to transfer my picture to it then put on here.

Another handy hint - if you are beginner, start with a light coloured wool as then you can see the stitches better.

I have just tried a different type of square that doesn't use chain spaces but I tried it with navy wool first and it was a nightmare trying to see where my hook needed to go through. Once I did one with a light colour it was so much easier until I got the hang of it.
