Hi beingfrugal, don't worry, it's a lot easier than Kirstie made it look!

I'd recommend you try charity shops for hooks - my local one charges 40p each. You will have to ask though - apparently crochet hooks and knitting needles are potential offensive weapons and they have to keep them behind the counter :rotfl:

Charity shops are also a good source for books (they'll probably be really old, but the techniques are the same) and wool.

    Good luck!
Oh dear, here we go again.

  • Thnak you everyone. I had a quick look at tutorials on you tube last night but until I have a hook it's like reading algebra. I need to do it as I go along I think. Thanks for the blog link. I've subscribed to this thread so when my hook comes (£1 ebay, postage included, not too bad) I'll have a go.

I've some wool to practise on (been finger knitting some pieces to sew my little girls gloves onto, thread it through sleeves so they dont lose them) so roll on hook delivery.

I mailed my sister the same ebay link and shes bought one too. We'll learn together :)

Hi beingfrugal and welcome to the crochet thread! If you are going to learn from tutorials on Youtube I would recommend tjw1963 here is a link to her basic stitch tutorials http://www.youtube.com/user/tjw1963#g/c/690A55EC532071F0 but she has some really nice patterns too. I only learned a few months ago and wish I had had someone to learn with  I think it is good to have a book too so you can double check you are doing everything right. You will have to remember though that American terms-that you will learn on youtube- are different to English ones. I only know American but the best patterns I have come across are in that anyway and there's millions of free ones out there so it's fine.
    Good luck

    I'm setting myself a challenge.
I am going to crochet squares to sew together to make a patchwork blanket for next year.
I am only going to use blagged or free wool.
    Wish me luck!

Sounds like a brilliant idea fuddle am curious though - where do you get free wool from? I have looked on freecycle etc but have never had any luck, it would be lovely to get something for free :j Oh and good luck of course!

i'll be scrounging from family members and regualar freegle requests. Was thinking of also asking people for old wollen jumpers etc, to pull to bits and reuse. I'm determined to do it without shelling out any money.

Thanks for the good luck wishes. I've one problem and that's not yet being a very good at crochet :rotfl:

My MIL gave me a jumper she had knitted but didn't sew together. It took ages to pull apart (you have to take my MIL's homemade jumpers apart because she doesn't follow any patterns and they are usually enormous with neck holes you can't fit your head through :))

The beauty of crochet is that it's very quick to learn and become pretty good at (and it's quick too, unlike knitting). I'm planning on doing some crochet presents this year myself.
  • Hi Guys :hello: Must say that it has been very quiet on this thread lately but please come back, I need your advice! :o I put out a call for ideas for decorations to add to boys/mens hats but had no response so decided to make an owl hat (a little more manly than bows and flowers I thought) so have bought a nice pattern from Etsy but just can't get my head around it! It is in American which is fine by me as that is how I learnt but if someone can help explain how I start that would be brilliant! Here's what it says -
Ch 33 - fine got that
Round 1: SC (DC English) in 2nd CH from hook, and in each stitch across (32 SC), DO NOT turn and continue SC in each ST on the other side of starting chain, do not join. (64 SC around).............?
Now when I work into the foundation chain with SC (DC Eng) I usually go under the top V (two stitches) yarn over my hook, pull through, yarn over and through again but do you think these instructions mean that I should just put my hook through back loop only and then do the same on the remaining loop on the way back???? I'm confused! The hat is kind of a rectangle so has corners for ears at the top. PLEASE help if you have any ideas!
    Thank you :T

As I'm in the middle of making a pile of snowflakes for xmas decs, I decided to have a quick go at this. Do your dc through the top v as normal, and when you go round it and crochet in the other side of the chain, put your hook through the same place you did with the first stitch. If you only go through the back loop it won't be firm enough, but doing both stitches through the same space will make it nice and firm. I know what I mean, but I only hope it makes some sense - it's sometimes difficult to explain it. I think crochet needs hands on showing really, don't you? :)
