My first big project, a granny square blanket. Yes, it is a bit rough round the edges but seeing as I only learnt to crochet in September I am ever so proud!!

Shysarah, jolly well done! I'm a newbie to crochet too and am very impressed by your blanket :-)

I think i must be doing something wrong...when my granny squares are joined together some of them seem to bulge upwards in the middle so the blanket doesn't lay flat...could all you dear experienced crocheters advise me on what i am doing wrong? Could it be something to do with my tension?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Katholicos, this seems confusing to me, are all the squares the same size? Same amount of stitches/same yarn weight etc? If they are then I can't imagine why there might be bulges.......but then again I only taught myself to crochet this year, sorry the only advise I can think of is just to make sure all squares are identical in size and shape :D Good luck

  • Thank you so much LolaLemon for getting back to me, I put a call out everywhere I could think of - I have crochet people all over the world now thanks to facebook etc ha but by the time anyone got back to me I had started it the way I described before, i have finished the hat part and it turned out ok. A few other people suggested I should go back into the same place which wierdly hadn't even crossed me mind - DOH! - so am going to try that on my next one, will post pics when I'm done :j

Your welcome. If out check out www. forsale . weekendexplorers. co .uk (i use this for all the stuff im putting on Gumtree, not using it to advertise) thier is a picture of the bottom of a baby bootie, and the middle row is where i have worked both sides of the chain. (the reason im pointing in this direction instead of my blog is that the blog doesn't have the pic)
I'll try and add a short tutorial on how I do that to my blog, hopefully tomorrow night.

Have you tried pinning them together?
You want the sides to match so that when u join you are joinin the 3rd stitch on the left with the 3rd stitch on the right, if that makes sence?
What stitch are ou using to join? are you slip stitching/single crotcheting, or are you sewing?
If you search out tjw1965 on yourtube, she has a playlist for beginners (thats how i learned) and i think she has made a playlist on joining pieces together.
