I have a small ironing basket under the bed....when it's full, I iron, normally every 5 days, I keep the iron and ironing board in the bedroom and shove a dvd going - Everything goes straight on to hangers and gets hung on the airer to air then goes in respective wardrobes that night. I iron DD's polo shirts for school, don't bother with their sweatshirts or skirts as they look fine, DH has to wear shirt and tie every day so there's always a few of those and he has a couple of washable suits so they need a press each week.

I find if I keep on top of it it's not so bad,

My mother used to iron (and probably still does) my dads socks, his pants and the dusters....we well as the teatowels and the dish clothes..so they would sit in a nice neat pile......life's far to short.

  • I used to suffer from "ironing mountain syndrome" but learned to drop my standards to fit the available time. I don't dislike ironing but am only willing to allocate a short time each week to it. Not sure we look any the worse for it!

    This is what I do:
Never iron bedding as it is poly/cotton anyway. I wash, dry it and get it back on the beds the same day. Looks fine to me! For this reason I am thankful my cotton duvet cover finally disiintegrated.

High spin speed is useful for those things which will be tumble dried but puts creases in items which will be hung to dry. I don't TD much so reduce spin speed, the extra weight in the clothes seems to pull out most creases.

If I think it needs ironing I remove it from the hanger, airer or washing line and iron it damp. Rehang to finish drying. Learned this trick from MIL! Makes ironing a dream. I time the shirts wash for when I will be able to use this method.

If I don't have time for any ironing I put things away anyway and iron them as needed.

When MIL comes to stay the method is slightly different as she likes to iron everything. So I have to generate baskets of dry washing to keep her busy!
  • Lucky you!!
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)
  • i do it in bits and so dont notice it!

my tumble dryer was bankcrupting me so i bought some maidens and as i put out my wet washing i iron the stuff that needs doing (makes jeans ten times easier to do) then i put it on teh maiden so it dries flat and then i can just hang it up!

    :)

I have one of these and though they are brilliant, dont you find them akward to store?? Mine has to live out in my shed as it just wont slip away discreetly anywhere in the house!!! (tiny house).Trouble is I am then too lazy to go and get it so end up using the iron

I am lucky in that part of my kitchen has been partitioned off into a laundry room so the press is permanately out - brill if I need to quickly iron one thing.

Before I moved I kept it under the stairs and developed large biceps from getting it out each time I ironed.

Strangely now although I have a place to store my washing before its ironed I actually keep more on top of it.
  • We still haven't got round to getting a tumble drier and I'm trying to hold out as long as possible!

    Solution to ironing:

    1. Husband irons own stuff when required (means I don't iron stuff which then sits around gaining creases!)
    2. Dry stuff on radiators/airers and fold/hang up asap
    3. Don't buy clothes which you just know will be a nightmare to iron - eg lots of pleats etc!

  • I tend to iron on a monday. Get in from work about 2.30, get the board and iron set up straight away so I have no choice but to do it. Generally takes me about 2 hours to do a weeks worth, after I have sorted out all the non iron items
