during the winter I dry our clothes on the radiators, when they are nearly dry I put them in the dryer for 10 minutes and then fold them and put away in the wardrobes and draws,I never have any clothes lying in piles around the house. My sons are 17 & 20 I think as they get older the ironing gets a bit easier, when they were little you couldnt see anything but ironing in my house,I think when you have a young family its very hard to keep on top of it.

    bleurgh i hate ironing!
    we've 6 children under 10 (10, 6, 4, twins of 2 and a 1 yr old baby) with all the washing you'd expect!

I tend to buy fleecey clothing if i can as that doesn't really crease, which cuts down a lot on the kids stuff in winter, especially the boys.

My bugbear is not being able to get things out of the machine quick enough as i'm often up to my ears in other things and then it's added more jobs to the list.

Frosty, i think that is very true, I can't iron while the little ones are around because of the danger aspect and i'm exhausted when they are in bed, lol.
  • Hurrah!! I've just managed to iron DD's school uniform and 2 x work outfits for me!!

I'm going to aim to iron 5 things a day in order to catch up with everthing. Do you think I might have finished all my ironing by next Christmas :rotfl:
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

    Hi all

There's only me, OH and 3 yo and I work full time. I pay my childminder to have my son for an extra hour and a half one day per week so I can rush home and do all the ironing I can in that time (I can usually finish!). I just have to make sure that everything is washed, dried and sorted the night before I plan to iron. Before I came up with that plan it was pretty much chaos in one room with a big pile of clothes on the floor and then ironing each morning...which always meant I was late for work!

I have 2 sons and OH (work shirts aarrgghhh!!) and have found the only way to keep on top of the ironing is to do a little every day! Will then only take 15-20 minutes and, as the pile never gets huge - it doesn't seem so offputting!! My SIL also told me to only iron one side of things eg school polo shirts, vests, quilt covers etc!! You can't tell, and it does save time!!!!

I've tried only ironing 1-2 times per week, but find the pile is so HUGE that I can't bear the thought of doing it!!!!

  • Hi

I pay my SIL to do it:rolleyes: not very money saving I know, but really just cant do it ATM.
Before I became a crip:eek: I wore daily trouser/skirt suits with shirts/blouses for work and hubby the same (well...not always a skirt suit:rotfl: )so that was 10-12 tops a week, then trousers-if not dry cleaned. Then going out clothes (used to heavily socialise) so tops, trousers, jeans (even if not dirty-sometimes they smelt of fags after being at certain restaurants), then bedding, then DD's clothes...there used to be tons. To keep on top, I use to allocate 30mins each morning, or if I needed to iron something, I ironed another 3-4 items so that it wasnt wasted iron time IYKWIM. Failing that, a few times I used a laundry service and paid them to do it.

My SIL irons everything for me, this is a rough week for the 3 of us (DD is 11):

Our bedding (SKS Cover, pillowcases x 2 and shams x 2)
    DD's Pillow cases x 2 and sham x 1
    DD's school shirts x 5
    DD's after school clothes (2 x trousers/jeans, 5 tops)
    OH's Tops x 5 (shirts etc)
    OH Jeans x 2
My Pj's x 5 pairs (im in these most the time as comfy)
Me-maybe 1 pair of jeans and 2-3 tops

She is a fab ironer and the queen of folding items. The above normally takes about 2 hrs and we have a good natter whilst shes doing it. I wash clothes ATM with Persil liquid and Lenor blue.

I am thinking of investing in a steam generator, but dont know if I have enough ironing to warrant this. Hopefully, OH & I will be working again soon so maybe rethink then. Do any of you guys have one and has it been worth it?

All other clothes are easy care and you wash and wear. I have cut down alot on the amount of ironing required but obviously with OH & I not working and wearing shirts etc daily, this has cut it down tons. Also, DD being at school means really not many other clothes. I do make her wear jeans more than once and check all her clothes she puts for wash, so that they only get washed if needed.

I don't mind ironing, good job really as I iron everything. I make sure I NEVER leave ironing until the next day. As soon as the wash is dried I iron it. For a family of five with loads of sports/dance clubs requireing outfits I only spend maybe 20-30mins a day at the ironing board.

An ironing press sorts out my ironing pile. Oh the bliss of doing king size bedding with just a couple pf presses, t.shirts in one, shirts in a flash - all while sitting down in comfort.

It was a red letter day the day the ironing board got taken away by the dustman :)

we used to have one of these presses,my son asked me if he could do the ironing (he was about 11 at the time)I thought well he should be ok and I got on with some other jobs around the house,he shouted that he had finished all the ironing and when I went to see what a good job he had done I could of cried, the first item he had ironed had a school logo on it and it had left an imprint on the top of the press, so every item he ironed after that had this logo stamped on it,my husband had my sons school logo on his jeans it was on sheets, towels . :rotfl:
