I shouldn't really explain myself, but most of my (& DH's) debt is actually from surviving as a student with a mortgage - not spending money on crap on the high street! More like a car, petrol, food, rent ETC!

nationwide is about as secure as they get surely, maybe if they got a default rate of 50% they'd freeze up alltogether but they dont use external funding half so much as banks afaik0
