  • Hi. I wonder if anyone can help me. I recently had to sign up to a debt management plan to try and sort out my finances. I couldn't use CCCS or payplan because I'm self employed and work is sporadic and they said unless they knew exactly how much I'd be earning they couldn't get me on a programme, so I ended up going with Eurodebt.

I have just received a letter from RMA saying that Virgin/MBNA have passed my debt on to them. What should I do with this letter? Ignore it, as Eurodebt are taking care of everything? Or would it be best to write to them and tell them about Eurodebt and give them a number and my case number so they can start dealing with them instead of hassling me. Also, do you think I should get in touch with my other creditors and let them know about my DMP? If so, who should I speak to, just a member of the call centre or to someone higher up??

    Any info would be appreciated

The Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidelines, clearly state (Section 2.6) that they consider it to be unfair practice to:
    • Pressurise debtors ..... to raise funds by further borrowing
    • Pressurise debtors to pay in full, in unreasonably large instalments, or to increase payments when they are unable to do so.

The point is simple ignoreing all the advice pay what you can and no more ignore phone calls and shred the letters. If they want more that can take you to court if they do it fine for you this is all assumeing you rent and do not own your property then it is not as simple.
  • Glad I found this site !

I`ve had three phone calls from this company about `my` Virgin credit card - on all three occasions, I`ve pointed out that I don`t have a Virgin credit card ( I`ve never had a Virgin credit card, and have no credit card debts at all ). Despite lengthy phone calls pointing this out, they keep phoning, trying to get personal details out of me.

I`ve contacted trading standards about this issue and have a case number from them. I`m informing the Police next.

Thoroughly fed up with this company`s behaviour.
  • I've had about 10 calls from RMA in the last 2 months and its driving me mad trying to sort the matter out. I keep receiving voicemails on my phone stating that is is urgent that a "Carol Unger/Angair" (the pronunciation of the surname varies wildly from voicemail to voicemail) contacts them on 01772833379 and on occasion provides a reference number to give them.

I have called back at least 5 times, including thrice in the last 7 days, to try and help them by explaining that I have never heard of this woman. Eevry time i have called prior to today I have been told the same thing- that a note has been put on their system to remove my phone number as a contact for the woman. Today, I was told firstly that my mobile number was not on their dialer, but then later in the call that it had been removed from it.

I'm hoping not to be contacted by them again, but I doubt it given the criticism they have received on here. If i do hear from them again, I'll try to speak to a manager to get some truth out of them, and failing that I'll be sending them a letter. All this trouble for a debt that isnt even mine.
  • Just been contacted by these guys - a completely anonymous text message from 01772765019 ( 01772 765019 for googlers ) asking me to call back and give a reference (the reference was in the text). When I did so they wanted MY bank identification information (mother's maiden name, etc)!!! Turned out to be about a late payment on my Virgin credit card - the mistake was actually Virgin's fault and they'd already refunded the interest charge yesterday although RMA didn't know. I'm pretty disgusted by the way they contacted me and that Virgin would use such a bunch of cowboys. I'll be closing my credit card account shortly.

Do not phone these people. Only ever deal in writing unless you have recording capabilities on your phone, and then only call/answer the phone if you are confident in what you are saying. If you don't own the debt, like BaronV, really don't talk to them, go to the site mentioned below and ask for help there. Asking for a manager won't help; they have a script to follow and targets to meet, so you just won't get anywhere with talking over the phone. Not least as they will 99.9% not keep to anything they tell you that is not written in black and white.

Never give them any actual details over the phone - least of all financial ones! All they'll see is what you're earning, not what your outlay is, and they will undoubtedly pressure you to reduce spending in other areas in order to pay them, even if that means you not having enough money to buy groceries or pay a mortgage/rent.

If you are having problems with any of the DCA's have a look at Consumer Action Group for help, template letters to deal with harassment, and probably most importantly moral support from thousands of people who are also having to deal with them, but who are now not afraid to answer the phone or pick up their mail because they can see how little power these pond-life DCA's have.

Remember they are only interested in getting details and payments from you. They ignore guidelines (and the law!) and really couldn't give two hoots about your circumstances, whether you own the debt or not etc. One poor member on CAG had a call on the day of her father's funeral. They told her they would give it till the evening and then call back for payment.

If you are confident in how to deal with them it makes all the difference as they are essentially bullies. Knowing the right things to put in a letter will really help. Most of the stuff I've read so far on this page they are not supposed to be doing, ie calling without leaving a company name, witholding numbers, telling you to borrow money to pay a debt, chasing a debt when they can't prove you own it. They are chancing their arm and they know it! If you can show them you're not being taken in by it you'd be surprised how meek they suddenly become.

i am stumped at how you people think... your in debt. your going to receive calls. your going to be spoken to in a 'forcefull' attitude. many of you people have been in debt for a very long time before a company such as 'RMA' get involved, i.e. barclays, MBNA (or whoever it is,) their debt collection agency then a third party such as RMA. you broke the terms and conditions of your credit agreement. which means balance in full within 30days (if you cared to read before signing). so if you cant pay it then you need to keep in touch and make arrangments for repayment.... you know your in debt so when someone calls stating that theyre wanting to speak to you regarding a 'PERSONAL FINANCIAL MATTER..' you think...mmm i owe money to lots of people sooo who could it be. you dont just hang up or speak to them like theyre something you just stood in. after all its not our debt. we sleep easy knowing that our money on payday wont be swallowed up by over due bills.

    subject of calls and letters

RMA only call after sending letters out 2 days before (yes we are a telephone based company letters are computer generated, what cannot be discussed over the phne that can be in a letter?). so you should already know why we are calling. so 'they' on the other end of the phone have to presume your ignoring the matter (which most of YOU do!) when you give excuses not to speak. We are people too, we dont need abuse from debtors. ok i know theyre are some people who take calls too far i.e telling the debtor that RMA will send a door to door collector round (yes RMA deal with door to door collections by the way) . but this isnt a threat this is what will happen if you continue to ignore RMA's calls. or lie to us saying that theyre another member of their family... we've heard it all before... mmm like hanging up on us straight away is gunna help your situation.

the best thing for you to do is to discuss the matter like an adult, answer all questions as honestly as you can.. decline to answer questions you think are too personal and explain why. we need to know your income and outgoing in order to justify your token payments (which we usually ask for the inc/exp over the phone)... then we will set up an arrangement for up to 3 months with a desired method of payment (preferably debit card payments as less can go wrong). with first payment due within first 7 days of that very call. if you fail to do any of above then further calls will continue on any numbers we hold. if you dont want to be called at work then supply an alternate contact number. but i must warn that if contact is not reached on the new number within a couple of days then we have to resort to calling you back at work. as questions need to be asked about authenticity of repayment.

    REMORTGAGE OFFER

and in regards to coments about remortgaging. we do not offer remortgages through ourselves but through a 3rd party company. who are unbiased about what debt you are in as well as dealings with rma, they are only interested in helping YOU to pay off all your debts, they will not help if they do not think they can get you debt free. we do not force anything like this on you as you most likely know already, it is against the law, we offer it as a way to help you out of debt, as whereelse are you going to raise enough money to clear all your debts. and possibly be on a better mortgage rate... you can even reduce your monthly mortgage repayments... but hey you most likely think im talking 'sales'.

the only advise about trying to get out of debt is to do something about it, dont just leave it for months on end, dont give an 'attitude' to the other person on the phone who is simply asking questions to understand your situation. believe it or not we are here to help. ok there maybe some advisors who are difficult, but simply, ask to speak to someone else. if they dont allow you too then take the telephone number. hang up and call back until you speak to some one more pleasant.

    DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY's

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.. if your going to go through a debt management company go through CCCS or PAYPLAN. theyre are free registered charity's totaly intent on helping you and your creditors. ok they may only offer nominal payments but we will accept.
DO NOT, go with companys such as euro debt, spectrum, baines and ernst.... DO NOT SIGN TO ANY that charge a management fee as all theyre interested in is that bit of money you pay them, as a debt collector these agency's are the worst to get hold of, hardest to talk to and usually break arrangement by making your payments late which result in further calls to you. which most comapny's tell you that you no longer need to speak to your creditors and simply tell them to contact them. these companies are not regulated and you will most likely pay more back to them in management fees than your actual debts... so when your account goes for further action because the 3rd party you have employed to sort your debts out has failed to pay on time it is YOUR FAULT they then cease to deal with that debt. so please bear this in mind AVOID MANAGEMENT FEE COMPANY's oh and the CAB....

    SETTLEMENTS

if you are able to raise an amount of money but not enough to clear debts creditor will offer settlements or indeed you can offer to do this your self, creditors will accept nothing less than 60% of the outstanding balance and give up to 2-3 months for this to be paid. but cannot offer settlement no more than once. so make sure you have the money.

    BANKRUPTCY

and if you see no way out of debt and your only paying your creditors back less than £10 a month then the best option for you is to go bankrupt. BRITISH GAS can help raise the funds, seek help about this from Citizens advice. it will mean you will have no bank account and unable to obtain any further credit for 12months. homeowners are unable to do this as they will lose their house.

for home owners the is more of a risk, they have an option of IVA's but again fail to keep up payments will result in loss of home too

well... this started as a rant.. but i hope i gave some usefull information as i know theyre are people who didnt just get in to debt through over spending....

simple thing is.. pay your debt. or go bankrupt and get the fook of our system
    :spam:

What a disgustingly bias post! What self-opinionated drivel. And what a terribly arrogant excuse for a person you are.

And of course, debt collectors never get into debt themselves!
  • this bunch of muppets bought my barclay card debt also. as they cannot harrass me by telephone, i get at least 2 letters a week, telling me to either contact them immediately and cut up my card, or when that one doesnt work, they send out a letter stating 'we have a proposal for you'. i started sending them to my DMP firm, but they still send them out, so i just shred them now as they arrive.
