Doubt anyone ever gets the full 8 on 8 meg!

Wasn't the 5 as good or better than your previous ISP?

Unfortunately not, I'm currently with virgin media, so I have a 20meg connection. I'm well aware ADSL works on the distance you are from the exchange so speed isn't set like VM, but practically all my friends have moved to o2 and are continue to get around the speed estimated on the o2 site when they signed up. That's why I thought mine might have been around 13 meg (wasn't actually expecting the full 13meg), but 5 is a huge drop from 13 and I wasn't willing to lose so much speed.

Does anyone know whether I can still use my Thompson Speedtouch 330 modem if I joined O2 for broadband only? I currently have up to 8Mbps, which fluctuates around 7.1Mbps which is good.

According to SamKnows I dont have wireless in my area and I'd like to try the Pro package up to 20Mbps. I can't be the only one with this problem - do O2 have alternative modems for non-wireless areas?

Can anyone "in the know" assist please?

Maybe you are mixing up a wireless router and wireless bb.

Does samknows say your exchange has o2? If so, you can use their supplied wireless router, and either wire it direct to your ethernet card on your pc, or alternatively use its wireless capability if your pc has a wireless dongle or similar.

    Samknows says:

LLU operator presence What is this?
    O2 / Be:Enabled as of 31/07/2007

O2/Be in my area under "LLU/xDSL Presence at your exchange" but under the section where it says "Broadband Availability Overview" there is a red cross next to the word "Wireless".

I think I am getting confused between the two. I thought wireless literally meant no connection to sockets. I have a PC not a laptop.

So does this mean I can use their wireless router (?) which they send?

How can I check if my pc has an ethernet card?

Look at the available sockets at the back. Even if you dont have one, as long as you have a spare slot you will be able to install one. They are cheap (around £5).

You do still plug your router into the phone socket, and the computers in your house can then connect wirelessly (or wired) to the router

Ok, thanks for the answers but just one last question please.

Does it matter where in the house I use it if I choose to use it wirelessly as its intended. My pc is in the attic of a 2nd floor house. Will the signal be lost if its far away from my master socket which is on the ground floor?

Should be fine, though cannot be 100% guaranteed - wall construction etc comes into it.

Ok, I will try it wirelessly then if that doesn't work well then change it to unwired. Thanks :D

I switched to O2 from Eclipse , Eclipse customer services were poor and they frequently throttled the line.

now on O2 and at times am getting as little as 80 kbps download speed!

even at the worst times eclipse were able to give me 512 kbps and at times it was as much as 2.7 mbps .

warning dont get broadband from O2

speaking to O2 they say they have some general problems with the access package and they hope to resolve some of the problem by mid april which is conveniently after my 30 day cancellation period is finished. Even more galling they cant tell me (and to be honest were quite dismissive about it) when or if my exchange would be "upgraded"

I am going to cancel as they cant even provide a broadband service, their speeds in essence make this a dial up service.

have eventually after having had to be persistent spoke to someone who was able to find out that our exchange is not on a list for upgrade!

O2 have been aware of this for a period of time, they know they cant provide a service of any quality and yet they continue to mislead customers signing up.

I guess im now looking for a decent ISP in a non LLU area who dont throttle and cost less than £20 per month (a flying pig would be an added bonus)

Can anyone tell me what these upgrades o2 are doing actually mean?

Is it just to sort the congestion issues or will it have any effect on speed?

Can anyone answer this for me?
