Nelski, I substitute sherry for mirin. Have you got Chinese 5 spice powder -think that has star anise in, at any rate it would give the right kind of flavour.

Thanks thriftlady (you are my recipe guru:D:A )

I nipped to Asda and had a look but no mirin - mustnt be a big call for it in Warrington:rolleyes: - there was a lovely looking chinese fella by the soy sauce and I asked him - he said it was a bit like soy or teriyaki but after sneaking a peek in his basket to see lots of heinz beans and a loaf of white sliced bread I decided to stick with my thriftladys advice:D He was cute though I would have his beans on toast anyday;)

Anyways I do have soy and teriyaki in though so I may do a double blind controlled test. Did manage to pick up some 4 star anis which looks interesting to say the least:D

So here we go again :p

    Hello all,

Have missed a few days again, have done my best trying to keep up and quickly read......
Special hugs to those recently bereaved. Also those not well.

Well yesterday I managed to finish my Uni assigment for the short course I am doing, what a weight off my mind !! I've found it really stressful doing it over the last three months. Have to give it in on Weds, working Monday and Tueday , 12 hour shifts so today and tomorrow are Freeeeeeee!!
Had a lie in, walked dogs and then went shopping with DH, bought another wind up lantern and a nice warm hat in Millets. Ready for anything now !
Then we've ordered desperatly needed dining chairs the ones we have are falling apart, have got some really solid looking beech ones, made to order which will hopefully last for ages . Also bought myself a solar powered watch, have been struggling without one for a couple of weeks. Have had a series of cheap ones which have gone wrong so again hope this better quality one will last and it says it will never need another battery !

Meal planning has gone to pot but am hoping to be more OS soon with more time to spare. DH not eating much due to prolomged lurgi bug , he won't fade away over night though!

Am debating joining flylady and weight loss threads, not sure if I can do either ...need to try though!

    hugs

Nelski - mirin is a Japanese rice wine - so I think the sherry would probably be a better bet than the soy or teryaki.

Just watched Murray beat Nadal in the tennis  Looking forward to the Australian Open in 16 days :D

Today I have sorted out my college bag, and read through my new text book  An interesting term methinks ;)

Going to crack on with some ironing tonight - not much on the goggle box (again), although new series' of ER and Brothers and Sisters start on Thursday night - so that will keep me busy ;)
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

    Afternoon Everyone

Its typical brass monkey weather here and I stupidly went into town clad in a t-shirt and denim jacket:mad: So as you can guess I was chilled to the core by the time I got home and so were the kids and they had every conceivable warm garment on them:o

Its been bread making and cleaning that have been the order of the day here as my bought bread has now run out so the BM is back in use.

I'm using up the last of yesterdays corned beef hash and turning it into a pie,it will be served with chips, peas and gravy. Not exactly healthy but warming food for a cold day

MSD - It sounds like your mum and sister were always going to fall out with you over something no matter what you did so as much as it hurts you'll have to carry on regardless until they come round.Shame for the boys though as I reckon they and you are the ones that have lost out in all this bitterness

    Afternoon all,
Woke sneezing, eyes streaming and full of cold, at least it's not another bout of flu. Finally got all the spare beds remade as we spent all day y/day taking down decs. It's the earliest we have ever taken them down but we're going to visit DB2 for a couple of days and stop with friends on the way home so didn't want them left up after 12th day.

DH loved the lamb balti I made on thurs and has asked for another so tonight I'm doing a chicken one, still got HM bhajis so just pilau rice to do.
Fruit will have to do for pud as I'm feeling rougher as the day goes on.

A warm welcome to all newbies. I hope you enjoy this thread, just one word of warning...........
I hope you're ready to take on an extended family/friends who are always ready to offer cheers, congrats, hugs, shoulders, tissues, support, tears, laughter, advice, much much more and, oh yes O.S. tips.

I have received all of the above which has made my good/bad times easier to cope with when I realised I was not alone.

CURLYTOP, What a sad time for you and your family, ((((((((hugs)))))))))
SUNNYDAY, Ouch, that sounds painfull, take care not to use it to much.
CAZSPATCH Hope you feel better soon.
BARGAINBIRD, When are you due? my DD2 is having her first baby 12th March and she is having a home birth.

Well that soup went down a treat and we also now know that the BM does a decent enough hi speed loaf - 58 minutes and it's perfectly acceptable.

I'm now trying to get on with stuff but like others being distracted by this board - we should really look at having a tidy up in the spare room in the interests of getting on with the decorating - anyone got any spare get up 'n' go I can borrow? Mine's got up and gone! :rotfl: Got chicken salad for tea with cheese and bacon tear'n'share bread whoops'd in Asda.

Oystercatcher - I keep thinking I ought to join Flylady too - it might actually organise me to get my act together but I'm not sure I'd keep up!

    :hello: Good afternoon!

I've finally caught up with today's thread, but I don't think I can remember what anyone said :o

    Welcome to our new posters!

((((HUGS)))) to all in need, especially those who've lost someone close

Csarina - I quite agree with you about the electronic tagging! Disgraceful! Hopefully there will be such an outcry that they won't dare do it!

Halight - I've been meaning to say how much I enjoy your posts, you always manage to have a positive outlook and it's great to see how you adore your twins! I hope you and Jorgan will soon find new jobs!

Stefejb - hope you are having a lovely day :D

AussieLass - cuddles for poor Benny

Pink-Winged - gentle strokes for Tillypuss, hope she's doing okay and that her waterworks problem will heal.

Churchmouse, mrs_mix, Shez, Bargain Rzl, catowen, VickyA, MATH :hello: :hello: :hello: :hello: :hello: :hello: :hello:

We went to see my in-laws y'day, and as I said in my post i was looking forward to going out to lunch. Unfortunately MIL's knee had decided it didn't want to work, so she couldn't go out as she couldn't climb the steps leading up to the pavement so we had fish and chips instead - really not DH's or my favourite choice of lunch, but never mind. DD1 came with us and she can't have fish and chips as she has gallstones, so she had a rather unexciting chicken baguette:rolleyes:

We've taken the tree down now and it's ready to be put back in the loft.

Sooooo cold today! I've got out the big guns (my cable-knit Jacob sheep's wool zip-up cardi) but my fingers are still cold and as for my toes.... Oh well, Spring's on the way :D

The postman brought me a nasty letter today, an IB50 questionnaire  not looking forward at all to filling it in as it takes me so long. And then there's the waiting in dread to find out if I have to go for a medical :( This is the third one I've had to fill in, and I haven't had to go for a medical so far, but I daren't be optimistic  Will just provide them with as much info as possible, and hope for the best!

Dinner tonight - Chicken, pepper and spring onion stir-fry. I've got the chicken carcass in the fridge too, waiting to be made into stock/soup, but can't face it atm :p Too tired after our day out y'day!

Ooh, just remembered, Dr Who Confidential is on at 5.35 and they are going to tell us who the next Doctor will be :j I just hope it's someone I approve of :p There are rumours that it's going to be a woman this time, but I can't imagine that so am hoping it's just a red herring.....

    All for now, best wishes
