Hiya Lula, it's great to see you again!! :j Congratulations on 8 months of freedom from all that weed, you set out to win and you've done it and I know you must be so proud of yourself. :T Wonderful news Lula and thanks so much for passing it on to encourage others!

Hi GonzoAston and welcome to the thread of many successes!!! Ignore your Doc who could have really encouraged you and spurred you on - I wonder just how many folk he's put off of quitting completely, the twit!!! I agree with Naomi, try your Practice Nurse, they are definitely more sympathetic. You really do sound as though you're determined to quit, but that being so, PLEASE get your OH to do you the courtesy of him going outside or at the least into another room! If you're going to do this then you don't need him there constantly taunting you - or - risking your health after you're starting to take good care of it!!!

We're always here to help you through any rough times you may have. You have the PM I sent, take good note of all the suggestions in it, water is wonderful and helps us so very much, OJs, clementines, satsumas (or any oranges) as well. Ice Poles are another great idea that one of our successful quitters (feedumall) soon found. Exercise as much as possible as it really does help get rid of any restlessness experienced, cravings too. Any time you want to know anything, please just ask. If you want to have a rant or have any sort of feelings - especially of elation then come on here and 'chat' or rant away to us. We're here to support you every step of the way!!!

All the very best of luck GonzoAston! :D

Hi Tommy and excellent news that you're doing so well, though I'm sure that's down to you being so very positive, you should be really chuffed to bits at your achievement so far. To get a sore throat at this stage is more than likely due to you quitting. Colds and sore throats often come about as soon as we quit, partly due to getting rid of the rubbish within us, though with throats it's usually because they miss the smoke and nicotine after so long having to put up with it; they just need a little time to adjust, but it'll soon settle down Tommy than you really can enjoy it so much. You're doing brilliantly and SO fast, bet your gf is proud of you too! :j Very well done!!!

Hi there Naomi, good to see you here and doing so well, it really is good to hear how well you're going! You do brilliantly with helping the others too, always a good sign that a quitter will stay quit!;) Keep it up all the way!

Well done on day 8 maccabe!!!!:T So pleased you get such help from the thread, it's always good to hear. How about asking you dear OH if he could find a different home for his cigs? He might not have really considered it before, bless him! Have a lovely weekend, you certainly deserve to after just over a week free!!!

Congratulations on 51 days free from them Graeme!!!! :TWhat some money you've saved too, to say nothing of your health!!! Well done Graeme, 7 weeks is fantastic!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, keep strong throughout if and know that every minute is closer to you goal!!! You CAN and you WILL succeed if you keep strengthening that resolve!!! :D

  • Beaut day in Essex today, took the dog over the fields and have come home to contemplate domestic drudgery. SueUU many thanks for all your wonderful words of encouragement, you are a true inspiration.
Smoking thoughts weigh heavily on my mind today and no amount of scrubbing is shaking them off. OH is being good and makes scarce when in need of a cigarette.
Best get on and make a list of what I need to get done today and hopefully fill my mind with thoughts other than smoking.
Well done all and have a good day

Hi, I wanted to write just once, to tell my 'story' about what smoking did for me..

I smoked from the age of 14 until 2 years ago, when I was 59. In March 07 I got pneumonia and had to stop - I'd half-heartedly tried many times in the past. 3 years, one year, six months, but always started again. This time it was easy, I had no inclination to light up ever again.

Tobacco had made a mess of my complexion, I'd describe it as nicotine coloured. Also my teeth had suffered so I wasn't a pretty picture. However determined to do something about myself I had plenty of expensive dental treatment and sought help to correct my skin. The colour improved quite considerably but the lines around my mouth are still very noticeable so I moisturise every day, stroking my skin outward/upward. It really started to improve, my social life was better, I put on weight which didn't bother me as I knew I'd take it off again when the time was right, and I didn't feel like a pariah. I saved money, took my DGD on holidays, bought nice presents instead of saying 'oh sorry, I forgot' when I knew my 20 a day were more important. It was all going well...

Last year, after the third cold in as many months (I never got colds before) I went to my GP as I was beginning to be very short of breath and after a battery of tests was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). I have to have two inhalers and a nebuliser several times day, each time I get a chest infection - four times in the past 12 months - I have to take steroids and anti-biotics, and this time have another lot of tabs to get rid of the muck still in my lungs that I can't shift just by blowing my nose. SometimesI feel like I'm suffocating, being smothered with a pillow when I try to breathe.

Even though it's a beautifully sunny day I can't go outside to hang the washing as the cold exacerbates my breathing by contracting my lungs. If I do have to go out I have to cover my mouth with a scarf...I look like I'm just going to rob a bank!

I appreciate that someone of 27 had more future than me and her cancer is devastating (she and her little boys are in my thoughts and prayers) but I'm 61 and I haven't finished living yet, there's so much I still want to do. Not young to some of you for sure but too young to be housebound, or worse. There's no cure for COPD, it just gradually gets worse with each infection picked up. I want to be able to travel to see my son marry in October, I want to get to know his partners 3 lovely children, I want to give all my support to my daughter who has lupus, I want to see my 3 adorable grandchildren finish their education and get on in life...

I don't want to sit here and cry for what might have been. I'm not a self-righteous ex-smoker, believe me that the last thing I am. There are times even now I fancy a cig and like the smell of a freshly lit one.

What I would like to say is if you're struggling to give up please, please keep trying. This existence just isn't worth it. If it makes just one person think about having this for their future I'll have achieved something.

    Good luck and God bless

Sparrer that bought a tear to my eye - My Mom has COPD too.

Well, I can't believe I'm coming up to my 5th week tomorrow  I'm still on my inhalators, & I'm still worried about how I'll cope when I have to come off them. I've got my chemo starting on Friday, & I know that I'm going to have cravings & tantrums but I wont ever smoke again.

Good luck everyone - if I can do it then so can you!
  • Hello Guys...

Thought I would just let you all know that I've just got £5 Amazon Voucher from joining the Nicorette Active Stop Programme. I've been with them a month and today the programme ended so I was asked to complete a survey. The first 200 people to complete the survey get a £5 Amazon Voucher, and mine was just sent my email. :T

I'm not sure if everyone will be entitled to the same (as its the first 200) but I thought as it's MSE you might like a Free Fiver!!

You just need to sign up to the Active Stop Programme and complete the programme which lasts for a month to be in with a chance - It's only for people that are planning on giving up in the next week/month and not those who have already given up.

    Hope it helps somebody x

Hi everyone have been lurking in the background - well done to everyone on your successes.

Sparrer - thank you so much for your post. I am going to print it out and keep it to remind me why I am doing this.

Gonzo - I will be quitting while my OH is still smoking so I am quite happy to be your quitting partner while our OH's carry on puffing away!

I have set my date for the 01 March. No real significance although I have always felt that March is a good month for me. So for the next week or so I am going to get my head round it - if that makes any sense! I will also stock up on water and oranges.
