    Marionsteve and Penelopedee welcome.

Have you thought of seeing your doctor and trying Champix. A lot of the posters on this thread have had great success with using it.

Anyway best wishes to you both. :)

  • I'm a bit worried about Champix and depression issues to be honest. I don't know - just know I don't want to smoke anymore and I feel ready now (if that makes sense).
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x

Oh I can understand that. I suffer with periodic depression but I took Zyban and suffered no ill effects whatsoever. Like a fool, though, I started smoking again.

Well you sound like you are in the best place, sick and tired of smoking Penelope. You just got to be strong for the next few days and then it gets a lot better. :)

There are 2 reasons (possibly another too) why I always return to smoking which are not coping with putting on loads of weight (I'm a bit worried about this one if I'm honest), so I will give your tips a go Sue, and me & my oh have joined a gym to go together, and the other (and this is embarrassing) is I get bored of it and think one will be ok and it kinda just snowballs. I'm definately all or nothing. I also have started again if I've been feeling down.

My plan is to go to the gym on the first day. Going for walks is a good suggestion as we love walking. My oh is giving up too but he is a social smoker so isn't committed to giving up totally like I am, so I think that will be a challenge for me.

Hi again, DFMS, your reasons to quit are pretty much the same as all of us who have smoked, our health is paramount - BUT - in order to have that in a far better state you need to quit...the same is true with the fear of what it's doing to us. I'll make no bones about it we have and have had members with Emphysema, COPD one who can barely walk. My SIL has died due to emphysema, another lady's sister has died due to cancer. So many reasons to quit there...and so many hundreds more that you and I both know of - or have done!

Those are the really nasties, but the weight problem is in your hands too! You've already come up with some great ideas, walking, you and your OH going to the gym and sticking to it.....you'l need puff for that...but it'll come much better sooner than you think!!

Your OH being a social smoker is a rotten shame, but let him go on outside whilst you count your lucky stars that it's not affecting YOU! At times like that, you make sure you have money saved from NOT smoking in a pot - then go and treat yourself to something you deserve! Do that every time he wants to smoke socially and praise yourself to the hilt because you will soooo deserve it!!

Though you think your other reason is embarrassing, it's more common than you think. People, for some reason, do become bored of it and think "one will be ok". However, you and I both know full well that it just isn't the case - you're back to being a smoker again - with all the fears loose in your head and the health risks going higher once again!!! If you're "definately all or nothing" type then when you get to that bored stage - STOP! Weigh up all the pros and cons and keep on pushing forward, because YOU CAN BEAT THIS for real and for good! You may get times of "feeling down"...will a fag honestly help it??? NO! You'll just feel even more down if you relent and smoke then start all the fears/health issues off once again. You have a great big favour to do for yourself - give up now and for LIFE - YOURS!!!! It really is possible, and I think you know you CAN do it. See you New Year's Day - if not before. :) You'll have us all with you, whatever you do, but we'd sooner you stay healthy! :)

Hi and a very warm welcome aboard, marionsteve! WOW...I've never heard of anyone setting light to THAT much money before!!! Never mind, because it sounds as though it's all about to change, I sincerely hope so for the sake of you both. I'll be honest and say I don't know anything about patches, though I know some folk have had success with them and I really do hope you and your hubby have the same help from them. If I were you I wouldn't give a thought to the cost of them, just get them and start off, as the longer you wait....the less you'll be inclined to save your health AND your cash! Have a look through the PM I've sent and please keep talking to us. We're here to help and will do so just as much as we possibly can, but if there should be a time when no-one's here, go ahead and write down your feelings, that alone helps you soooo very much.

Be patient on your journey, and know that if you have a bad day that like as not the next will be so much better - that really is the way it works. Always remember to that the further away you get from it the less powerful the cravings are..and the less you have them! Never be afraid of quitting, look forward to what you're going to gain - please! :)

Hello and a very warm welcome, penelopedee. It's always a joy to see someone who's just had enough of smoking and wants to say goodbye to it, well done you! I'm pleased you're settling into the Alan Carr method, keep on doing so! I've sent you a PM to help a little as well and wish you all the very best for quitting now and for always. You CAN do it, just take it a day at a time and keep chatting to us, it really does boost your moral to 'talk' about your feelings - good or bad. :)

The very best of luck to you all for whenever you're ready, just - please - don't put it off any longer as there's a whole different life out there without them and you'll soon find that out. :)

Can I join you. I am currently taking Champix and plan to quit 01/01/11 even though I am only on day 7. I want to do it for health reasons, my dad died at 38, I am now 44. Also found out a friend of the family has cancer and isn't that much older than me. I know it is going to be tough but I am going to take 1 day at a time.
  • me and my hubby are going to try the weekend to give it, well start anyway...we spend a massive £700 per month we have just worked out!!!! I think i will try some patches, prices seemto vary so much..any ideas the cheapest place at the moment??? I ordered a free weeks trial, but it says wait 10 days for delivery, and was hoping to start before that.... I know, it seems mad trying to save a few quid on patches, when we are spending that much on smokes...... things are going to change in our household!

can't you get NRT free from your local health centre? in northern ireland, all prescriptions are free, so you can go to your GP, or a smoking cessation clinic (for me seeing the practice nurse) and you get whatever you need, patches, gum, inhalator, tablets, for free! plus the nurse rings once a week for the first month to check up and make sure you're using the right thing.

Hi Topsyturphy (what a fabulous name!)

I think one day at a time is a really sensible way to do it. In the early days, you can feel very fragile, so to be saying "I will never smoke again" can seem very frightening. After all we do see our cigs as a crutch even if they are killing us!!!!!

I wish you the very best. Lots of posters on here have gone the Champix route and they are very happy non-smokers now. :)

  • Morning all, thank you for the warm welcome.

I'm halfway through Allan Carr and already those long white smoking sticks are beginning to loose their sparkle :) I'm a control freak and I hate the way nicotine has been controlling me. Wouldn't let anyone else do that to me.

Trying to finish it by tomorrow morning.
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
