Hiya jammy - some great advice there, well done. Well done also on how far you've come again, though it has to be said that you only started again because on one horrible event, otherwise you'd be way ahead. Water under the bridge I know...onward from here!whathavewedone wrote: »A year ago I thought I'd never be able to quit for good. Good luck to all you quitters, hang in there - there is light at the end of the tunnel!
Very many congratulations, whathavewedone!!! :T:T:T You're done fantastically and I'm sure you're so very, very proud of yourself. Your paragraph quoted above sounded a lot like me when I was younger...and now all that's 12 years ago! It's so good to know what happens to quitters after they don't come to the thread any more, so thanks so much for letting us know of your success, please come back again. Thanks a lot.
Hello and welcome to the thread, onetomany. Congratulations on the time you stayed free for, you can obviously do it again, though try and keep in mind whatever it was that messed things up in September. If your name denotes you like a drink then just be careful not to have one too many after you've stopped and allow alcohol to start you off again.
Hi itselliebell and oh what a lucky girl you are, not just the presents and dinners, but those 2 fag trials too for sure!I wasn't disappointed to hear it, though I would have been if it had sent you back to where you didn't want to be. I'm so pleased they tasted so disgusting and hope you'll never to be on the safe side! Stick to the crocheting ellie, so much healthier.
BTW. Congratulations on having been free (no one can say anything about those 2) for 3 months, ellie, you've done brilliantly and deserve to be very proud of yourself!! :T:T:T Keep it up. I'm glad you had such a good Christmas - and know it.
Keep going everyone and be proud of yourselves...no matter how many steps you've taken! Even if it's only a few it's still a HUGE step in the right direction! :T

whathavewedone wrote: »Hi everyone
I haven't been on this thread for ages but just wanted to confirm that I'm still a non smoker. Had a couple of temptations this month - the Xmas party where most people were smoking and meeting up with an old friend who I last saw just before I quit smoking 9 months ago. We always smoked together and in the past (apart from when I was pregnant) meeting up with her was often the beginning of the end of a quit attempt.
I hardly ever think about smoking now and when I do I find the thought of it quite disgusting.
A year ago I thought I'd never be able to quit for good. I used to worry that I would get ill and leave my children behind before they grew up. Well none of us knows what's round the corner but at least I don't have to feel guilty any more.
Good luck to all you quitters, hang in there - there is light at the end of the tunnel!

itselliebell wrote: »hello all
it may disappoint some of you to hear i did light a cigarette, i kept telling myself i could eventually have a smoke when i'm drinking, maybe after being off them a year or two. i am happy to say though, it was vile! and i took 2 draws before stubbing it out. it didn't even feel natural to hold it. i had a memory of what smoking was like, how it felt and tasted. i suppose i was testing myself, as i have fallen over on quitting twice before. i believe crocheting has really helped with breaking the physical habit, and having them out of my system made me realise how disgusting they are! it was like a little test for me i suppose, i really was torturing myself thinking that i might want a cigarette when x is there or when y happens, and now i know i don't need to, cause i don't even like them!
WELL DONE itselliebell you managed to put it back out because you are not a smoker :j well done on jumping sraight back onto the non smoking wagon

Hi is it ok if I join you guys (as of 01.01.11)? Have decided I am going to give up - decided several weeks ago now- the fear hasn't hit me yet so that's a good sign! But obviously have tomorrow & the following day to go....
I have given up several times but not for a couple of years now. Am determined this time it will be for good (gosh writing that puts butterflies in my tummy!) I've also decided I am going to go cold turkey (i've read the Alan Carr book several times so know its just a matter of waiting for the urge to subside each time it hits me), and if that is too hard I will buy some patches... Might go and see how much AC audio book is...
Be lovely to come on here for moral support, as no doubt its going to be tough for a while... ThanksDF as at 30/12/16

Hi determined new ms and a warm welcome to the thread. Help the fact that you're new here to really count for something - the time that you quit for good! Wouldn't that feel sooooo very memorable, very MSE too. :money:
You've quit before so you know you can do it again. Try and recall what it was in the previous attempts that induced you back again and be sure to do your utmost to avoid it/them this time round.
The last part I've quoted above is so important, keep coming here and talking to us - whether you're having a good day or a bad, the difference between having a struggle - then being so proud of your next day is quite amazing. I agree with jammy about the last days of smoking, cutting it down so it's not so much to miss is good, but you'll know what's good and what's not by now so go with whatever feels good and tick to it.
On the first few days you quit, clean your teeth more; you'll freshen your breath that much that the last thing you'll wish to do is dirty it with smoke! If you need to brush them too much and there's a risk of making the gums sore then take a small amount of toothpaste and pop it in your mouth and 'swill' it all around so you freshen it that way.
If it were me, I definitely get the A Carr tape, a worthwhile investment...and keep on listening to it at times that you need to, or reading the book. I've said in the PM about the importance of water, fresh air, eating fruit and vegetables and exercise - please take heed as it makes the journey so much easier - keeps you from putting on weight too!Long, deep breaths help so much too.
The others have placed such an importance on reading the posts in this thread - and they are so right...it really does motivate you. We all wish you the very best to get through this - and you CAN and you KNOW it!!! Think how delighted you'll be once you've mastered the blessed fags....the things that can, and will, harm you - IF you let them!!! ....and remember, it's not what you'll lose by quitting - it's ALL you'll gain!

Hi thanks so much for the warm welcome! ok reasons for quiting are simple (but heavily weighted) the big one for health reasons, then the psychological reasons (no longer freaking out that its going to kill me) and lastly financial. I was working out I spend about £70 each month on smoking.
There are 2 reasons (possibly another too) why I always return to smoking which are not coping with putting on loads of weight (I'm a bit worried about this one if I'm honest), so I will give your tips a go Sue, and me & my oh have joined a gym to go together, and the other (and this is embarrassing) is I get bored of it and think one will be ok and it kinda just snowballs. I'm definately all or nothing. I also have started again if I've been feeling down.
My plan is to go to the gym on the first day. Going for walks is a good suggestion as we love walking. My oh is giving up too but he is a social smoker so isn't committed to giving up totally like I am, so I think that will be a challenge for me.
I am trying to read the thread through, but its long so its going to take a while! Thanks again xDF as at 30/12/16

me and my hubby are going to try the weekend to give it, well start anyway...we spend a massive £700 per month we have just worked out!!!! I think i will try some patches, prices seemto vary so much..any ideas the cheapest place at the moment??? I ordered a free weeks trial, but it says wait 10 days for delivery, and was hoping to start before that.... I know, it seems mad trying to save a few quid on patches, when we are spending that much on smokes...... things are going to change in our household!0

Ok then, half way through the Allan Carr method - will be back in the new year to report.
Good luck to anyone else giving it a go.This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
Fingers crossed x0
