The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

Hi 365 Days,
I smoked for 32 years & smoked on average 30 a day. If I can you can.
I stopped 8 months ago.
Try & get an appointment with a smoking cessation person through your GP's surgery & take time to read this thread.
There is tons of support on here & everyone seems to really bouy each other up when the going gets tough.
All the very best0 -
Hi everyone.
Today I bought a new car. The deposit left me with £5 in my bank until tomorrow. I needed shopping. Yesterday I realised via a very persuasive car salesman that if I didn't smoke I could afford a brand new car (Don't worry I didn't sign up)
So after that little ramble I have come to the following conclusion. I don't want to smoke anymore. Haven't wanted to for ages, but have been sorting out other things (i.e stopped drinking nearly a year ago now) I have 2 fags left i think, possibly 3. The new car has pushed me to the limit financially, however if I stop smoking I will have an extra £50 a week.
I smoke about 30 a day. Pack never lasts a day, and I've smoked since the age of 11 and am now 39. I've had a couple of attempts at giving up, longest lasting 3 weeks.
I've a few patches knocking around somewhere which I will find in a minute. Doc won't give me champix and I went very 'odd' on Zyban.
So that's me!
Shame the doc will not give you Champix, but if you are determined than any of the aids available to you will help :T:TS!!!!horpe0 -
A very warm welcome 365days!! It's good to see yet another wise person making the best decision you ever could do. Given the choice of continuing on smoking
- or quitting and having far better health prospects, better finances and a new car - I know which I'd go for any day!!!!
I agree with choille; "Try & get an appointment with a smoking cessation Nurse", it's extremely helpful to have someone to monitor you and urge you along and give advise where necessary. Use the patches and go for it! Every time you get a craving or what you 'think' is a craving, look at that car - or better still measure yourself healthwise and the benefits you'll so quickly be feeling! Better still, put your mind to something totally different or tear off up stairs, go for a brisk walk - anything to distract you from evil fag thoughts! Keep chatting to us and reading the thread through, it's very motivating. All best wishes 365, you've still plenty of time to get your health in far better shape...and look at all the money you'll save! £50 a week!!! Keep it up and never look back!
Hiya missi! Good to see you back...though - how far exactly have you come? In other words you haven't put the amount of time on the Title bar, the means used either! I know it's Champix, but others don't!! :whistle:Well done missi, you're doing wonderfully!!!
Very well put Daz, it IS the determination that'll see us through far more than the means used.
Wherever you are in your journey folks, it's now the start of another new week, make it count for so much. Make it count for a BIG step closer to the winning line...whether you're minutes away from stopping, or days, weeks or months...it's the start of the next bit towards victory - and CAN be done!!! :j

WOW! So many new names..........nice to see you 365days.........some just beginning their quit journey, others who've travelled a fair way. :T
I was sorting through some stuff in my bedroom last week and found 3 menthols cigs in my huge make up box. I was going to throw them out but forgot and they're still there - I have absolutely NO desire to sneak a puff. I will go up in a bit and put them under the tap tho';)
I tried so hard to stop before and wasn't able to manage a day:eek:
The difference? THIS THREAD :j
Thank you so much everyone!

See, I bought Allen Carr's app from iTunes for iPod touch (£1.79, but for just one day's smoking abstinence, it pays for itself!) a few weeks ago. Following it, I managed an entire week without smoking, but became too arrogant and thought, "Well, I've controlled myself all week, I'm sure I can have a few and still remain in control!"
Two weeks later, I'm back to my silly habits. But I'm going to do my absolute best NOT to buy another packet. Especially, using the DemoHOtivator, I worked out that I'd save just under £120 between now and Christmas, simply by getting rid of the cancer sticks!
Having said that, Allen Carr's method of stopping has been the absolute best method I've heard of so far. If you do follow it, just don't be a fool like I was, don't get ahead of yourself!0 -

I picked up on that too DD! I'd imagine it's got to be 'now' though!dundeedoll wrote:I tried so hard to stop before and wasn't able to manage a day:eek:

DD, that is so good to see, and it's wonderful to know just how many people use this thread and get success from too. I'm sure it helps so much with having the chance to read right through it and to pick up the advice of others as they move along with their journeys.
You're doing so very, very well DD, and I'm hoping you're really feeling the benefits of having stopped. No doubt your lads are so pleased at their Mum's success this far too! :T:T Well done on not even contemplating the menthols, drown the little b*g**rs!
Hi and welcome inaneswine. Never mind, off you go again, but this time or in the future, never, ever get complacent or think "just one puff/fag will be ok". It's a very, very fortunate person that will get away with that, and we've had none on here yet!!!A lot of folk swear by Allen Carr's method of quitting and you obviously do, so go on and see it through this time, you'll never regret it once you've really accomplished quitting for good!!
I see you're around princessdawnie, how are things going for you?
Keep up the pace everyone. This journey is the best one you'll ever make in your life as it gives you your LIFE back again!! Another great day today all...and yes, you CAN do it!

Well, last ciggie for me was last night at 9pm. TBH, finances are what has pushed me into it finally, but seeing my mum (3years 'clean' in Jan after 60-80per day) give up and manage, really has inspired me :-) Have talked to partner, he has agreed that no more for him once he finishes work today...eek:eek: - not too many rows I hope lol! Am going to put a fiver a day from today into a 'pot' and use it at the end of every month to pay off some of the bills and also have a takeaway as a treat - just saying hi anyway lol
Hope you are all well...
KarenYou only get one life - but if you live it properly - it's enough! :rotfl:0 -
Hi again princessdawnie, great to see you home again! Just saw you on the SPC 3 thread and thought to myself, "I'll watch out for her!"
Don't worry too much about your family PD, if they haven't been through it then they won't understand. However, you'll never get negative attitudes here, we just love understanding and supporting each other, and if someone's struggling then everyone bails in to help and advise...after all - why not?!!!
Alan Carr's been a success for many on this and the first thread and I see no reason why it shouldn't work for you. Would it be any easier for you to give it a go after Christmas (New Year)? Don't give it too much concern, go for the feelings inside and when the time comes that you think "I'm going to give it a go!" come on and tell us and we'll all go ahead with you, so to speak. You're too young not to get to grips with this Dawnie, and here we believe it's doable for ANYONE & EVERYONE, you included!! :j
Hi Karen and a very warm welcome to you. It's great to see you've already started to quit. All the best to you and your partner. Your Mum has done brilliantly and I'm sure she, as well as you, is so very chuffed at her success, so she should be too!!! Even though you and your OH are doing this together, support each other every minute, hour, day that you're quitting. If things do get a bit fraught then go on in the bedroom .......and take your mind off it. NO, no, no, not that (then again, why not!) I've started so I'll finish. Grab a pillow and use it to shout or scream into so you relieve the tensions...more than one way of doing that!!!
How are you quitting, Karen - cold turkey, patches, gum etc? Anything will work so long as you're determined. Use your Mum in knowing for absolute certain that you BOTH can do this too! Keep chatting on here, tell us of any rough times and shout about the good ones!!! Drink plenty of water, eat plenty of fruit and get plenty of excercise...though we've already touched on that, but there's brisk walking, jogging etc too. Reward yourselves and keep on saving, but always keep in mind that it's your health and your LIVES you're quitting for, first and foremost! You CAN do it, Karen. All very best wishes to you both.
