Nicotine and Insulin
Nicotine also inhibits the release of insulin from the pancreas, a hormone that is responsible for removing excess sugar from a person's blood. This leaves the smoker in a slightly hyperglycemic condition, meaning he has more sugar in his blood than is normal. High blood sugar acts as an appetite suppressant, which may be why smokers think their cigarettes reduce hunger.
Hence why we eat differently when not smoking.Hi everyone,
Like quite a few of us, I put on weight after I quit smoking - around 1.5 stones . I used to get through the meal as fast as possible so I could go and light up. Realise I coudn't really taste my food anyway, since I'd lost most of my sense of taste through being a smokerSince quitting of course my taste buds are blooming again, so part of eating too much is down to enjoying my food! Couple of other things - I believe smoking i.e. nicotine, speeds up the metabolism so we burn off the calories a bit quicker. Also, the ciggy marked the end of the meal - no ciggy, no need to stop eating
So, am trying to increase exercise (not difficult now I can breathe easier) and try to eat more healthy food. I've been on Weight Watchers for just over 3 weeks now and I've lost just over 6lbs so am well pleased :j
Well done to everyone, specially the newer folk - it's just the greatest feeling being free from smoking!
Pam x
So so true, Pam!
:T on the 6 lbs...........that's over a 1/4 of what you gained already!
Well done to all 'the champix gang' and of course everyone else as well.............sorry haven't time at the moment to go back through all the posts

I feel the two are connected0 -
I can take or leave the ciggies usually but always end up smoking when I am in the company of other smokers.
During the week, I visit my Mum's elderly friend and we sit and do crosswords and have a chat.
She smokes like a chimney and with all the will in the world (plus patches, gum and the pretend ciggie thing) I cannot resist the evil weed.
I have loads of weight to lose too and know my health is sufferring but I can't seem to get a grip.
When I am on my own, I don't smoke at all but other times I puff away merrily.
I feel so ashamed that I can't pack them in and also lose weight.
It's making me really depressed and I feel like a total failure that I can't sort this out.
Well done to all of you who have found the willpower to kick the habit.

A very warm welcome to the thread, an4rew and KittyBoo!
You sound one very determined lady an4rew, and if you can lose all that weight as well as coffee and cola drinks then, in time, you can surely go for gold and beat the fags. Re your concentration problems if you give up; it's amazing when we quit just how quickly we can adapt and start to get on with things in a whole new light. No doubt you had similar problems with your weight? If so, then you very quickly nuckled down to persevering and keeping your mind focused on all that was necessary.
So many folk are having real success with Champix both in the past and now (read through dazco's, missi1's & alan's), how about asking your Dr if you could try it. Anything's worth a try...even the things you've tried already.
KittyBoo, I'm so glad you want to join us, you're very, very welcome. Please don't feel ashamed or feel total failure about your vices - we all have one or two anyway - but if you really can't shift from those feelings then use them as your strength, to give you the push you so desire to be able to get to grips with both.
Have a read through the PM that I've sent and see if any of the things in there can help you with the quitting, keep it with you and keep reading it...you never know when the moment might come! It's certainly true that if you could help shed pounds and quit the fags you would feel a much, much, much healthier person...and you'd have NO depression either!!! Read through the posts on here and see if you can't muster up the courage to push on with getting your health back where it once was.Keep with us on a daily basis too and see how others have found that, contrary to what they & I had always thought, they and I COULD do it!!! It's so exciting when you get further and further away from that final fag. There's a LOT of help to be had here Kitty, and you're more than welcome to PM me any time. One day Kitty, one day!
BTW, you haven't got your SPC number on your sig!
It does help me come Christmas.
Very well done indeed missi1, DD and itselliebell. You're all sounding thrilled to bits at your success...and so you should too!!! :T:T:T It really does sound as though food and the tablets go together perfectly.
I agree with larmy that it could very easily be sighs of relief that you're experiencing itselliebell. It may be to do with the lungs wanting more fresh air too, but certainly nothing sinister.
Congratulations on getting past that difficult time xxlaurissaxx, I think we were all relieved that you resisted so well. Brilliant news!!! :T Re the never filling up problem; I think we all get that for the reasons Pam and DD have given. It makes sense to me. Stay strong and focused and you'll get there!
Great news about the 6 LB weight loss Pam!!! :T I quite agree with the food v fags theory too.
An interesting fact of yours too DD.
Keep up the fantastic work everyone. You all deserve such praise...you earned it no one else! Focus on the goal ahead and let nothing stand in your way!

A little while ago I came across the site below and 'lost' myself in listening to clips of beautiful sounds of nature. It struck me that, even if you don't buy any of the MP3 downloads, you might find them really relaxing to listen to on-site.
It may especially be useful to you KittyBoo.
So, I got in touch with Brad McBride, a lovely gent who owns the web site and asked for his permission to put a link on and he was more than happy to do so. So, enjoy listening in folks.

Hi Kittyboo - When I stopped I just had to avoid places & people where there was smoking going on - weak or not it did the trick for me. I also had a plan before going anywhere on how I would react to certain situations as they cropped up. But at first, until you feeel stronger just avoid situations & people who will get you craving & giving in to the evil weed.
You can do it.
All the best.0 -
My God it is so good to see so many people doing really well.
I hate to single anyone out but I am particularly proud of Missi. You had quite a few failings beforehand and the chances of you quitting did not look good. But you are doing it, you have done it :T:T:T:T:T
All us new quitters must remember that ALL the people that re-started, and so had to re-quit years later, gave in to the temptation of ONE cigarette or cigar. We must all swear never to have the ONE.:beer::beer::beer:
I have also decided, at the weekend, I like the smell of smoke.
