In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal. In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal. In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level. In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase. In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks. In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%. For people who have not yet contracted emphysema, they can usually throw off most of the effects of smoking within 6mo's to 2 years. In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half. In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker. In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker. In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
So my risk of a heart attack has dropped by half :T:T
Next milestone 5 years!0 -
Well done to all those of you who are doing so well
I am so pleased I have found this thread, I have absolutley no choice but to stop smoking otherwise in my consultant's own words "you won't be here in 10 years time"
I am 46 years old and have been diagnosed with severe emphysema with a lung capacity of 30% - this is mainly due to smoking but has been considerably exasberated by a genetic protein deficiency Alpha 1 Antitysprin. Last year having become short of breath at times I was diagnosed as asthmatic - however following recent chest x-rays, ct scans and the great consultant I have been refererred to with the latest diagnosis I have no choice but to quit. In view of the additional blood problem, for which there is no treatment, the prognosis is not good BUT I can improve my quality/quantity of life by lifestyle changes. Quitting smoking is going to be a huge lifestyle change and despite my diagnosis it is still not easy - I know some of you may be horrified to hear that but I'm being totally honest. Today is going to be my first smoke free day (last ciggie 8pm last night) and hope to keep reading all your inspirational posts to keep me going. I am on a 10 week patch programme with a nicorette inhaler.
Sorry if my post is a bit gloomy but that's the reality of my situation and the very reason I must protect my lungs from any further damage.
I know I can do this0 -
I am on day 4 without a ciggie.
Although I am not a daily smoker, I always seem to find a time/event when I want a ciggie.
Last Monday, I went to a friends house and we were playing Scrabble and I smoked 7 cigs in 4 hours which is alot for me.
I am overweight as well and at 52, I can do without any additional problems.
Good luck to you all and congratulations to you who have succeeded.
I am using the patches and the inhalor and occassional gum.

Well done :T:T:T:T:T:T
Although common sense says you should do it easily, those little b*stards have damned near killed you!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Retrain your brain. When you feel you would really like one, HATE them instead!!!!!!! Hate them for every bad thing they have done to you.
Go outside and rip fags from peoples mouths and let them know that you are onto them. You know how they operate and you will not be brainwashed by them again.
Speak to the fags!!! Tell them you HATE them!!!!
And the very best of luckS!!!!horpe0 -
Spoken from the heart again dear Daz!
You are soooo right too!
A very warm welcome mustkeephoping, it's so good to see you here with us! Congratulations for that WHOLE day being behind you, a fantastic achievement and so much to be very proud of!!! :T:T
So very sorry to hear of your health problems, but you're doing the most positive thing you possibly can do - and that's to QUIT and do so for good! Your post may have been a teeny bit gloomy, but at least you've let us know the score and how desperately you need to give up and that way we can do our utmost to help you as much as we possibly can.I don't think any of us wouldn't understand that even after receiving your diagnosis you'd be in a position where it still wouldn't be easy for you; it's one thing to make the decision yourself out of choice, but having it landed on you does make it harder, but.......you CAN do it, and I'm sure you WILL! Daz (dazco) is absolutely right in the way he advises you to view fags at weak moments, he hits the nail squarely on the head. Follow it through. Though to "Go outside and rip fags from peoples mouths" might land you a few black looks or worse, so be careful!!
We have had others on here with emphysema and COPD, but not with your complaint...though my Uncle had it and gave up the fags AND lived to be 80!!!! Get those lungs as healthy as you're able to mustkeephoping...start getting fresh air into them ASAP, it will help so much. All the very best for day 2 and a far better outlook on life!!! :j
Very Many Congratulations IWRS!!! :T:T:T A whole year is absolutely brilliant and I'm soooo very delighted for you, honest I am!!! :j:j Be really proud at such an accomplishment IWRS and keep looking ahead with that smile on your face - you deserve it!!!My heart attack risk has dropped too!
Good to see you back KittyBoo and with such great news too!!! :T I'm so very thrilled at your success so far. How about trying to eat, fiddle with or drink something when next playing Scrabble, anything like it so that it won't set you back. You CAN do it and have made your start. Focus hard Kitty!!
Hi oldreekie, it's lovely to see you here - and with such a good free from time behind you too!! :T:T
Very well done EVERYONE!! You're all doing great, including Daz, Alan, choille, missi1, DD and xxlaurissaxx! There's so much determination and great vibes on here and that has to be great for all new quitters too. Keep it up all - you know you want to and you know you CAN!!! :j

My God it is so good to see so many people doing really well.
I hate to single anyone out but I am particularly proud of Missi. You had quite a few failings beforehand and the chances of you quitting did not look good. But you are doing it, you have done it :T:T:T:T:T
Strange
Thanks Dazco, Im kinda proud of myself lol, I finally got there but I knew I had to keep at it as I was getting so annoyed with myself for giving in each time before finally kicking it with the Champix.
My next prescription will last me a month which is good and then the final pack after that will finish the week before xmas I think.0 -
Hi everyone.
Today I bought a new car. The deposit left me with £5 in my bank until tomorrow. I needed shopping. Yesterday I realised via a very persuasive car salesman that if I didn't smoke I could afford a brand new car (Don't worry I didn't sign up)
So after that little ramble I have come to the following conclusion. I don't want to smoke anymore. Haven't wanted to for ages, but have been sorting out other things (i.e stopped drinking nearly a year ago now) I have 2 fags left i think, possibly 3. The new car has pushed me to the limit financially, however if I stop smoking I will have an extra £50 a week.
I smoke about 30 a day. Pack never lasts a day, and I've smoked since the age of 11 and am now 39. I've had a couple of attempts at giving up, longest lasting 3 weeks.
I've a few patches knocking around somewhere which I will find in a minute. Doc won't give me champix and I went very 'odd' on Zyban.
