Was really dreading yesterday, I was so aware of the temptations that was gonna be there with the other smokers! But you know what ...I did it:D I am so chuffed with myself that I managed to quit smoking over the Christmas period gotta be the hardest time of the year! Can now say I gave up smoking "last year ":rotfl:sounds so much better!
Have a bit of a hangover this morn, but nothing compared to likes I would have had if Id been smoking it really does make a difference this smoke free body of mine;)
Good luck funkymonkey I was on the patches too but stopped using them a couple of days ago and Im cold turkey now. They really irritated my skin and left me with a red square which would be itchy an hot for days after but they helped me through the first couple of weeks so hopefully they will get you through too with no probs.
Almostanangel first one of the day was by far the "best" one for me, the first day off giggies was the busiest day of my life and I found that since then keeping busy when u have a craving is the only way too go(for me)! It certainly wasnt easy, but after 30yrs of smoking it certainly wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. You`ve got nothing to lose by trying and you will get masses of support from this thread, believe me when I say I dont think I would have magaged without it. This thread has became my new addiction!:o
Good luck elfen for whenever you decide to stop. Cutting down and coming on here is a great way to prepare yourself for stopping. Maybe you should set a date and that will give you something to aim for, write a list of all the things you need to do and do them all on that day to keep yourself busy!

Happy New Year to all you new quitters. Day by day, or hour buy hour is the way to go in the very early days.

It really is such a wonderful achievement and the sense of freedom, especially when nicotine has finally left your brain as well as your body, is tremendous.

What better gift to give your body than to dump this miserable addiction.

It can be difficult sometimes to appreciate that you are getting free from something and not giving up something precious. Logic tells us that nicotine is disgusting and bad for us, but nicotine tells us something very different.

It tells us we need it, as a treat, to help us cope, as a reward and in it's extreme form that it is our best friend, something we can always rely on.

Of course none of this is true!

Just relax and be sure that you can do this...........relax and breathe deeply through any cravings..............relax and cry if you need to........it is a loss, but it's a bit like getting rid of an abusive partner, you have just got so used to having it around and don't know any different.

Good luck all of you! Keep posting. It is wonderful to see our newer members taking the time to post and encourage the latest quitters.

We are all in this together. We can do it!!!

Hi all and Happy New Year to you all too, just been to my parents newly built house and it is beautiful. Spent about half hour in the kitchen where my mother was smoking and to be honest it didn't bother me because its quite big so I moved away from her, anyway, got back in the car and I am stinking of smoke all my clothes smell really bad, they are going in the wash, I'm going in the bath ;), I smell.......

How did I ever enjoy smoking?

My son went to a party New Years Eve where a couple of people were smoking by the open kitchen back door.

When he walked in NY day I immediately smelt the nicotine on his jacket. He was gutted. Not two weeks ago, this same jacket had to go in the wash for the same reason, that he was at his girlfriend's parents who smoke heavily.

The other day I came out of Waitrose. It was one of those dank, dark, foul days we had during the week. There was a lady outside having a fag. I felt so sad for her and I think it shows up just how miserable an addiction it is. If you can't even wait to get home and at least sit down in your own home and have the illusion of relaxing!!

I moved here few weeks back...don't know a soul...no family, just me and my dogs.
Gave up smoking 5 packs of hamlets a day two weeks back...and it doesn't bother me one bit.

How?....simple, I got flu and thought I was about to die...propped up in bed gasping for breath for hours on end with no-one to turn to.
After nearly two weeks in bed and now feeling a lot better,I have no wish to light up whatsoever and don't even think about it.

    I've also packed in drinking....simple when you're stuck in bed.Total Christmas expenditure....about £10.

    Hi all

Had a pretty cruddy day today, and here's why. I signed up to one of those "quit smoking" programmes - you go once a week, have a chat with the counsellor and (in my case) get a weeks supply of patches. Due to the Xmas break, my counsellor didn't run a normal session last week, but neither did she give me enough patches to last me until the new year. She said she'd deliver them when she was passing. (she didn't have enough supplies to give them out in advance).

Well, she hasn't delivered them, and the contact telephone numbers aren't manned because of the Xmas/New Year holiday, so I can't get in touch with her or anyone else connected with the programme. I'm absolutely skint, which is why I had to give up smoking in the first place, and I've no money to buy my own patches. I have a packet of fags on the shelf and they've been winking at me all day. So, it's been cold turkey for me today, and I'm climbing the wall. I'm so annoyed that there are all these initiatives to get you to quit, then the very people who are supposed to be supporting you, let you down. Of course, I don't know the reason behind it all (and there may be a valid excuse), but she has my telephone number, email address etc. So, I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms, and I'm really teed off. too.

    Thanks for listening, folks.

Hey welcome JoJO. You have come to the right place. Stick with us and keep posting and you will get there. I am a many time quitter too. This time though feels like the right time and belonging to this thread and the many wonderful people on here helps me and in turn I hope to help others get free.

Just keep posting. In the early days people post often, then they seem to disappear for a while, only to pop up weeks or months later to say they are still smoke free, but nicotine simply no longer features in their lives anymore, or even if it does occasionally rear it's head it is so insignificant. They are living smoke free!

Well done on your decision. :)
