The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

Hi Sammy and welcome to the thread.!:D It sounds as though you have 2 very good (or should that be bad....) reasons to give it all up and, for the sake of your health, never smoke another ciggie! If you have a Consultant telling you to quit, then please do listen to his advice and take note. You have one life, this is it, live it to the full! The flu has given you that vital start to a whole new healthy life, please, don't go back! Your bp will also be helped so much, as contrary to the belief of many, smoking actually makes you more stressed!!!
We'll look forward to you visiting to let us know your feelings, and whatever they are do tell us then we can help you out and generally support you. You have the pm, read it through as many times as it takes. All are valuable points which will really help you quit and ....stay QUIT!!!
All the very best! Sue
Almost at that first week then Liberty and what a brilliant goal that first week is! Well done for reaching out and getting there! :T You should be so very proud of yourself, now strive on to whatever you consider to be your next goal; possibly the 2nd week, but only you know that for sure. Good luck and stay quit!
Hi joop! I really hope all 3 of your kids will follow your great lead and give up before they get much older. It's bad enough for us to smoke, but to watch our youngsters is really awful. Fingers crossed for them joop and well done for getting decortaing the house and especially your ....... den is terrific! It really helps so much in pushing us firther into that 'clean way of living' once more!
Hi there Jay_Jay.All too often after quitting we hear folk complain complaining of the beginnings of a cold coming and - yes - it does seem as though they're linked, but after smoking for many years I'd imagine the change to the body is such a shock for it that it responds in the only way that's connected - to kick out at the parts most affected. I hope you soon get better and that it's only a cold. Only she says, that's enough sometimes!Oh I really do hope your DD1 does follow her sis's lead and kiss (make that kick!) goodbye that awful habit, it could well happen if she sees what an effect it's had on you both. Fingers crossed for her to make it a trio!
Have a great Sunday everyone, get well soon all those who are rough, including you sammy! Stay strong all!

Hi everyone I stopped smoking 7 weeks ago with my DH we were spending ridiculous amounts of money on cigs even though we didnt smoke indoors at home. My two DSs dont smoke and I have always felt guilty about wasting money so this time I am so positive.
It is my fifth attempt and I always get the urge again after about 6 months to fall off the wagon so I thought I would join you all for moral support when the going gets tough . Good luck to everyone.0 -
Morning all!
I am a quitter from the old thread but thought i'd just mention that I've been stopped for one month, one week and one day!!! I had been a 20+ a day smoker for more than 20 years. Since 2004, however, I have been the worst of all things - a secret smoker! - since my last quit failed and I 'forgot' to tell my hubby and children that I was back on the evil weed!
I had a major wobble earlier this week when life returned to normal after the Christmas break. It was quite easy to forget about ciggies with a house full of people and a completely different daily routine. However, whith hubby back at work and children back at school, I seemed to be facing many triggers for the first time. Pre-quit, I'd wave them off, read the paper and have a ciggie. I'd hoover, put the washing on and have a ciggie. Then I'd walk the dogs and have three ciggies!
So it's been a really tough week doing all of those things for the first time without my 'friend'. However, with some willpower I didn't know I had and some love and support from Sue-UU via PMs, I think I'm over the worst and have not caved in!
I have also discovered swimming which has helped in many ways:
1. It is wonderfully relaxing and releases all thise feel-good seratonin-wotsits!
2. It is helping to shift the (cough!) few extra pounds that Christmas and my quit have left me with
3. It's pretty impossible to smoke and swim at the same time!
If you have the time, I'd recommend a few healing lengths to cleanse mind, body, lungs and soul.
Keep at it all the new quitters - I hope I am some sort of encouragement that it can be done.

Good morning all, good to hear everyone is doing well.
Here is a good list of withdrawal symptoms:
http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/withdrawal1.htm
In my 1st 2 weeks of stopping I felt rough, had a bad cold, about a week later on one Saturday night, I went to sleep and woke up at 3am feeling extremely cold, shivering, tight chest pains, sore throat and a headache, couldn't get to sleep after for a few hours. But it went away within a couple of days. Had a bit of insomnia, weird smoking dreams etc
Each body will react in different ways, but it's the process of getting that devil inside of you to get weaker and die! Don't give in to it.
Drink plenty of water, eat lots of fruit and veggies and do moderate exercises or try out some relaxation.
It will all go soon and we can all be FREEEEEE
Have a good day everyone, time to get ready and hit the pub later for the Utd v Chelski game. Come on DEVILS :jSmoke-Free since 15/11/08

Well these blasted germs are very resilient, am still feeling dreadful, although have actually managed to get dressed today, which is an improvement!!
On the positive flip side tho, its day 11, I think anyway, am losing track, and still no desire or cravings, which is fab!
Well done everyone on getting this far, with each others support we can beat this evil weed and give it the kicking it deserves!!0 -
Hi Lilly! Good to see you're still with us! The routine cigs are really hard to give up, so many triggers - even passing the same corner of the road where I used to light up. I take my dog on different routes now - he gets very confused!
Well done Vi - you know we're all here routing for you!
All the best x0 -
Hello everyone
Can I join your thread please? I've taken the decision to quit tomorrow, so tonight is my last night as a smoker (I hope!!!!)
I'm gonna go cold turkey. Just stop. Apparently it'll take 3 days to get all that nasty nicotine out of my system and then it's just the psychological stuff to deal with?
My motivation .... bit of a bad one really. Just found out on Friday that my darling nephew has Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I know it's the most curable form of cancer - especially at his age (he's only 12) BUT I'm devastated at the treatment he'll now have to go through.
The news devastated our entire family. I can't bear the thought of doing that to them again. And I've promised my sister I will share the chemo appointments. How can I go to a children's cancer hospital with poor little Tom and sit there wanting to go outside for a ciggie??!!!! There's just no way. Plus, if things go that way, and he needs blood or bone marrow, don't I owe it to him to make sure that mine is as "clean" as it can be??!! Every time I see him he asks me when I'm quitting. I haven't seen him since his diagnosis but I'll see him next weekend. I want to turn up as a non-smoker. Can I do it??!!!!!DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244
