Today someone has actually said how fresh my skin is looking and how well I'm looking, which after 2 weeks of flu/cold, no fresh air or excercise is amazing! They didn't know that I used to smoke or had given up so ????
And no amount of expensive creams will do that for you - AND - its free, infact you save a fiver a daySmoke free 01/01/09 :TPaD since 10/12/08 - Dec-£46 / Jan-£39.88CC1 Mint [strike]£1215.39[/strike] - £896.63£2 savers club #82 £4 (banked £20)0 -
Well Kalojac - it's not the end of the world. Maybe next time just think what you have achieved and though it is difficult - in the end it will be so worth it.
Since December 1st I have saved £177! Woop woop me :T ! I could have bought the worlds most expensive face cream (well, just a little bit; maybe the bit that gets stuck under your finger nail) but it wouldn't have made me feel better than I do right now!
Breathing in deeeeply and exhale - no cough! Hurrah!
OK... going to bed now x0 -
The good night's sleep is wonderful news Liberty and could well be a lot to do with the Horlicks as it's supposed to be great for really relaxing sleep. Stay on both for a while and see how you go. Do try and keep away from the goodies for kiddies lunch boxes though as they won't help with the weight and you may sulk more if the pounds go on too much. Do please try the water, clementines and Ice Pops, not so appealing maybe, but a darn sight more affective and barely any cals!!!
Hi queen vi, I can't help agreeing with joop on her sentence "It is not another battle but today will be another VICTORY!" You may even get them to follow your great example before long, here's hoping! :j
Still going good then mudgekin! I think that's really sweet of your dear mum, she obviously realises what you're going through and is trying her level best too! Stock up on the wine gums as well as the ice pops, they may be cold, but that's half of the trick!
Wonderful news Mandy12!!! That's just over your first week already and you have every right to be so proud of yourself, you've come a long way, as have most of you!!! You're right about the treats too, so save that money and really look forward to thinking about what you'd like best and go of it, then the next at the following goal or week.:happylove It'll help keep you motivated.
Hi sillyme and a warm welcome to the thread! I agree with Waspeze and his suggestion as it would break the actual smoking bit. Now for the questions!! How long after the drinking evening can you do without them? When you use the word 'drink' is it just alcohol that affects you or the atmosphere? If it's alcohol then why not try OJ's, Bitter Lemons or anything non alcoholic. If it's the atmosphere that's the problem then how about breaking it and 'drinking' elsewhere from pubs or wherever it is you drink? Habit is all what cigs are about, so break one and you could break IT! Would nibbling at anything with a different drink help at all? How about 'playing' about with something, keys, rubber band, bracelet, necklace, piece of playdoh andything! Tell us what your tipple is so that we know more and may be able to help more. We'll do anything here to pull folk through this evil habit, so let us have more Info. We'll continue with support no matter what!
Hiya Waspy, good to see you and pleased the laptop's ok now. Congratulations on 50 smoke-free days!!!!! :T You're doing so very, very well Waspy, on to your next goal now! Love the pic, had always wondered what Waspy looked like! Actually, that's definately the face of a chap who'd apologise to a mirror after walking into it!!!:rotfl:
Jayess, you're welcome, please just try to stick to them as they really do help. Bless your hubby for getting you to stop in such a lovely way without a lot of horror chat or pics. Vivid dreams can affect us all even if we're not taking anything to help, it's the mind messing us about that causes them. Your asthma will be so much better and very quickly too as a result of quitting. You have so much to look ahead to Jayess, strive on and put a pic of those kiddies as well as your 'little ones' in as many places as possible, whilst you're thinking of them and watching those darling faces - who the heck could think of those er.....what were they called?!!!
Well done on your reason today for not smoking Jay_Jay, not only are you helping yourself so very much, you're also helping save the planet!!!:T £40 saved so soon, so much to be proud of!!!
I hope you feel better again tomorrow after the antibiotics have really kicked in hard BlueIsTheColour. I have a heck of a cough with mine too and haven't smoked for 10 years!!! Still, mine's a little better today thank goodness. By the time your cough and infections are really gone, you'll be far more detached from the habit and will feel as though you've had a great big leap ahead! Keep that thought! Another of you on day 8 too!!! Very well done indeed!!:D
You're doing so very, very well joop and I bet the skin remark gave you such a lift! Glad to see you're still keeping up with the satsumas! You're so right in the words "There is NEVER just the one." I only know one on here who tried it and got away with it putting her right back to square one, but by golly did it ever make her violently ill!!! Never worth the risk. £177 saved is a wonderful amount, be very, very proud of that great success joop!!!:T
Hi Naomi, a few days closer to the event then! It's obviously working if your intake's going down so well. Just keep your eyes forward .....please!kalojac wrote:I have to confess yesterday I caved in and bought a packet of 10, I know it was sooo stupid of me, and I didn't enjoy it, I felt sick and queezy but still managed to smoke 5 of them!
Today I am fine though, and haven't had any cravings that are too bad, I am sooo dissapointed with myself but am trying to get into the frame of mind that one slip up isn't the end of the world and trying soo hard to focus on the other 7 days that I did so well.
Hi kalojac That took a lot of courage to come back and admit it, so well done indeed! :T If you had to try it at all then I'm so thankful you did it early enough and that it had the desired affect. If I were you I'd do exactly as you appear to have done and look upon it as though you've been been a non-smoker since 31st Dec, but had one little blip. That's what we've done in the past with those who have had one little slip up, we do it for a reason - so it doesn't set them right back to the beginning all over, where it could easily put them off of going all through it again. You'll know not to do it anymore anyway. The very best of luck in pushing forward to day 8!!!
Never mind graeme, you made it and got there! Excellent work as you're over that first week, the very first hurdle!!!
A very happy smoke-free Friday's just about here folks, another great day to count. You are all doing excellently and can only be immensely proud of your achievements. Well done ALL!

Thank youthanks for your replies.
It's alchohol yes, and I don't really know how long I can go with cigs after a night on the tiles - I'd say forever if I didn't drink to be honest. But I've not gone without a drink (and therefore a fag) for longer than a week or two probably.
For me it's the actual inhalation, feeling it in my lungs that I crave when I have a drink - they just seem to go hand in hand for me. I love the first draw on a fag when I've got a glass of wine infront of me. Christ I sound like a total junkie
I normally drink wine - although it gives me monstrous hangovers and it really gives me the cravings for cigs most. But most alcohol will bring on the cravings to be honest. White spirits - gin/vodka is probably the least cravingest drink.
I'm alsmot thinking hypnotherapy might be an idea - to break the mental association I have - but I'm not sure how much stock I place in that or if it's just a load of mumbo jumbo.0 -
Hi guys,
I have been reading this thread since 02 Jan, which is when I decided to give up. Since I keep coming back to see how everyone else is coping, I thought I may as well join in.
I used to smoke around 5 a day since I was 15/16, and I'm 24 (recently though I have been smoking nearer 7 a day). I couldn't really face turning 25 and still smoking (as I can no longer get away with the young and stupid excuse!!!) Decided I don't want to prematurely age, have yellow stained teeth and ruin my health, so I'm giving it up.
I read the Alan Carr book which has been brilliant for me. I also put on a nicotine patch on my 1st day, but had to take it off... made me feel sick, my arm went dead and it gave me a rash!!! The Alan Carr method advises against NRT anyway so I'm quite happy with that.
What I have found so far is that my breathing is less shallow- running for my train is easier!, my skin doesn't seem as grey (not that I thought it was grey before), I have more energy, my sense of smell is heightened and I actually feel strangely calm... despite the fact I'm giving up?!?
I just hope I am strong enough to stay on the straight and narrow. I do think about smoking- firstly in a sort of romaticised way, then I look at the reality and think- yuck- it will taste awful, make me feel sick, make me smell and then the nicotine monster will have its grip on me again!!! Not on your nelly!!! Wonder if I will think like that after a few glasses of vodka? :cool:0 -
Hi Sophie - welcome to the thread. I have read the Allen Carr book and I think it is brill. I even bought the one about 'stopping your teenagers smoke' but I think I need to buy the 'how do I communicate with a teenager' first lol. I've lost the art of understanding the grunting language - sorry I'm deviating off our non-smoking challenge. I can relate to what your saying about romanticising smoking, when I've tried to pack up before I used to look at people that were smoking and be so jealous that they were 'allowed' to smoke and I wasn't  how sad is that really - but this time round its different, I don't want to be that person who has to be reliant on those little white sticks and the smell is really getting to me - don't know whether its the cold weather or not, but it is not a nice smell anymore.
Keep up the good work :T :T well done :T :T
p.s. my good reason to pack up smoking today is I've just painted my bedroom and now the ceiling will stay white (yes, I know, i used to smoke in my bedroom) :eek:Smoke free 01/01/09 :TPaD since 10/12/08 - Dec-£46 / Jan-£39.88CC1 Mint [strike]£1215.39[/strike] - £896.63£2 savers club #82 £4 (banked £20)0 -
hi all just wanted to congratulate you all well done
currently on day 13 had to take my patch off the other night as it was burning and causing me to lose my mind lol but next morning with a new patch was fine (strange)
everyone at work is spurring me on which is strange as previous times dragged me back to "my old friend" as we like to call them
nice to be in the warm instead of the garden freezing my butt offsmoke free since 27/12/2008

hi everyone!!
welcome to x.sophie.x and sillyme and any other newbies!!
jay_jay - i have been the same any time ive tried to quit - been so jealous that other people can smoke!! but they will end up all wrinkled and have yellow fingers when they are older, and we wont!!and also, on a more serious note, they will be more at risk from dying from smoking related illnesses. i just try to keep these things in mind when i start to feel envious
sillyme, i totally know what you are talking about!! i used to be a lot worse before the smoking ban, and then with the smoking ban i realised that i did forget about smoking for a while, so im hoping that will help me through quitting!! sorry, i honestly dont know how you are going to overcome that hurdle - i didnt smoke in the house so its probably easier for me to have a drink in the house and not smoke.
kalojac, we are all only human and everyone has blips - at least you have a fresh memory of how stinky cigs are to renew your desire to quit now!!
naomin, thats good you are starting to cut down, hopefully that will make it a bit easier when you do quit!!
my sickquitmeter is telling me that its been 1 week and four hours since i had a cigarette, and im very proud of myself!! :T i had a little craving the other night when i couldnt sleep and got up at 2am to work on the computer - i used to love going for a cigarette in the middle of the night when i couldnt sleep, and just sitting outside in total quiet!! but apart from that i really have been fine - after dinner tonight i didnt even have the 'after dinner' craving!! im hoping its not just because i havent been well and havent been following my normal rountines, but even if i start to get cravings again when i go back to work on monday at least ive had a full week of not smoking to combat them with!!
i do feel really grumpy today, but i think thats more to do with the fact that i havent been out of the house from monday, and aside from my mum & brother popping round for an hour yesterday to see me, the only person i have seen is my OH, and while i do love him, it would be nice to have a bit of social variety lol!!plus im feeling stressed as we move in 2 1/2 weeks and not one bit of packing has been done, and i havent been well enough to do it, so im starting to feel a bit panicky about that
but im sure it will work out ok - im just a bit of a pessimist who always imagines the worst!!
i dont really have a good thing about not smoking today, as its been sooo long since i have been out of the house, so until i start venturing out into the world again, i shall choose a good thing about not smoking in general. for today - not having a car that looks like snow has fallen on the back seat, when its actually loads of fag ash!!
oh, and hope you feel better soon blueisthecolour - flu is horrible!!
