The giving up/cutting down alcohol support thread! Part 2

Back at the beginning of 2008 a thread was started by In Search Of Me which proved hugely successful. It's grown so big that I think it's about time we start a fresh one and what better time to do so than the new year?
The old thread can be found here:

There are a few of us who want to give up/cut down & I thought it would be good to widen the net to support each other along the way!
For me alch & feeling good for the time I'm drinking & then rubbish after go hand in hand. A bit like drinking & smoking & drinking & getting the munchies! Last year I gave up alch & fags for 10 months & then "slipped" towards Christmas until by Jan I was doing both with alarming regularity. I dread to think how much both cost me financially and I know physically that I've felt rubbish. My lungs hurt, have put on weight & literally none of my clothes fit so I will have to buy more - which means a dent in my budget that I can ill afford. My skin is also yukky & much nicer when I dont drink/smoke!
I had my last ciggies the night before last & last wine on Tues. I know I will feel 100% better when I crack it but also know it will be hard. One disadvantage here is that all too often DFW "parties" tend to involve alcohol so I'm also hoping that this can possibly be a safe haven for those of us who want, or need, to abstain, for now at least!
Anway - I hope that this can be a place of real support for people who are sturggling. I do wonder whether there is a link between debt & drinking as from the Jan thread it was obvious that so many struggle to give up! Plus I know for me that I feel much hapier and in control when I dont drink (or drink in moderation) - which of course begs the question "why do I do it?"! Anyway, I do but will now try not t ad hope some of you wil join in. Some days I know I wil fail, just as I do with my debt free journey and I am more than happy to be given a swift (but nice!) kicking when I do! Hugs all and dare I say... but this time with water!!

Went round to friends for dinner and to see in the New year last night.
He knows I don't drink but he decided that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the "bells" without a glass of something. So I was offered all manner of things all night but managed to see 2009 over the threshold with nothing more than some sparkling water.
Was great to be able to drive home and not have to hang about for a taxi till all hours.
This is without doubt my favourite time of year for being a [STRIKE]non-drinker[/STRIKE] ex-drinker
God luck to all who are embarking on the first steps to cutting down or giving up.0 -
Indeed New Year, New Thread.
New Years Eve Sober Version II has been and gone and I have to say it was easier than last year by far.
Hope everyone's OK.

fortunately for me i've only ever had a penchant for lager and only occasionally a vodka & coke. once the kids came along and i split from partner i was more or less constantly drinking in the house cos i couldn't get out. i used to get a crate of cans for about £15 with the intention to only have them of a weekend but the temptation was too much - it ended up thru the week too.
i didn't enjoy drinking as such but it was the only thing i had for 'me'. but it got to the stage where the kids were seeing me 'merry' and which they referred to jokingly on occasion and i was horrified and thought no way - i don't want my kids seeing me drinking and thinking its normal, also i'm the only carer for my kids so if anything happened to me whilst i was drunk or if i ended up getting properly addicted i don't know who would look after them. Alcohol or kids erm kids and kids every time.
don't get me wrong i missed it like mad for a month or so but somehow managed and its the best thing i ever did. now the kids are older and i've got my freedom back but if i go out i drink coke and couldn't be happier also, i live in liverpool and after 6pm parking anywhere is free so i can have a great meal out and just drive home so life's so much easier.0 -
Ooooh, how great, a spangly new thread for a spangly new year! We can put all the old carp behind us and start afresh! Thanks Mrs Tine for starting up a new one!
Although, have to report, I've had panics already and it's not even lunchtime  :eek:DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
Try not to have the panics Jo. Stay strong you will feel better for it. I am saying that as much to myself as well cause I finish work soon and I have 1 can of beer in the fridge.
In keeping with the NSD Challenge I am not going to spend on beer so will the can still be there tomorrow.
Tune in tomorrow to find out
Stay strong Jo
