I doubt he's telling you porkies reebok probabally more of a misunderstanding if anything, can't see why he'd be lieing to you ;-)

The first thing you said sounds wrong to me, that those that were successful were put on a waiting list. In my experience the best candidates get a successful letter and the next best get put on the waiting list. There is two lists, one is a merit list and everyone is on that, but the waiting list is just candidates that ordinarily wouldn't have been offered a post after the interview, but gives them a second chance in case a position arises in the future. That's the way I see it anyway.

In your success letter who was the contact you was given on the letter to ask for advice? Is that the person you've called? If so, are you asking the right questions? Have you asked, if you are guaranteed a job subject to your pre-recruitment checks going through? What was his answer? Has he told you, you are on a 'maybe' waiting list, if so, then that speaks for itself.

If you really do believe this person is giving you poor advice you can always ask one of the other contacts on your success letter?

Just a few thoughts, good luck with it all!

Hiya, With regards to the waiting list...Every area is different, although some areas do follow the normal procedure of candidates being sent either the successful letter (if they achieve the best score at interview) or a successful 'you're on a waiting list' letter.

I know that not all areas follow this procedure, as my area has just created a waiting list, with every1 who passed the interview on it (although still in merit order). No1 has recieved just a successful letter. Overall theres around 90 people on my waiting list, and no1 has been employed as of yet, so there is just one list in some areas.

Just thought i would share my experience, as i got quite worried as i had been sent the waiting list letter, and after reading this thread i thought i never had a chance! However this hopefully isnt the case.

    So good luck!

Well my advice would be to not do anything until you are offered a definate start date, if that's the permanent position then I'd call them and tell them you obv are taking yourself out of the running for the other two.

Not sure what the best course of action would be if one of the fixed term caught up before hand though and you was offered one of those. Don't know if accepting that would impact your chances of also getting offered the full time. Then again if you decline that on the basis that you're waiting on the full time, then didn't get the full time that would be kind of bad so not sure about that situation! Perhaps it might be better to ring them and just ask them truthfully what your best course of action is?

thank you and.... sorry for my previous spelling mistakes. :rotfl:
  • In addition to my previous post, can anyone else shed any light on the numbers being taken on for EO roles in South Tyne & Wear? The staff did clearly advise at interview that there were over 100 roles to fill and HR have verbally confirmed to me on the phone that everyone who was successful at interview (and therefore on the 12 months waiting list) would be taken on. Now, having had the interview on 1st April, I'm still none the wiser, and my most recent call to HR was worrying as the lad advised that things may not be so, and that perhaps not everyone would be taken on. Given that he has told me a few porkies so far and not been very professional overall, I'm reluctant to believe him ... can anyone please advise? I am continuing to apply for other roles, but having had hopes built up that they were taking on everyone, I keep hanging on to that hope that as I have been successful at interview, I should be hearing from them soon???!!!

Hi there, just to clarify from my point of view, the only letter I have had was stating 'you have been successful at interview and will be placed on a 12 months waiting list which does not guarantee a role'. When I rang them, they also told me that everyone on this waiting list was being posted, as I, like others, thought that the waiting list was a bit pointless, assuming that over 100 people had performed better than I did at interview. When pressed for clarification, the HR team said that everyone had been placed on this list, and that I should wait 4 weeks or maybe a bit more to allow their checks etc etc. I did not receive a success or posting letter at any time, and still haven't, even though I am supposed to be starting at the end of this month !!! I know this doesn't answer your other questions in terms of uncertainty, but I am positive that there is only one list in the recruitment for this particular role.

Hi there, thanks for the feedback. Without going into too much info, the person I have dealt with is the only contact I was given on my 'success/waiting list' letter, and I do have genuine reason to doubt his efficiency. Without going down that route however, there is apparently only one list for this area role, and I'm within the 105 that they said were being taken on. Their own words were that they had a lot of work to do in terms of paperwork etc, and that it could 4 weeks or so until I heard from them. Now, six-seven weeks on, I started to wonder what the position was, and he now turns round and says I should start looking for other work as the waiting list has no guarantees !! After being told I simply had to be patient while they did their checks and paperwork as everyone was being taken on, I find this very frustrating. Clearly I will carry on looking for work, but I would love to know if anyone else is having trouble with mixed messages, and in particular, does anyone know how many people are being taken on for definite in this area and any ideas on time-frame? Thanks again.

where the any people here at the liverpool test centre on sunday 17th may? how do you think it went?
  • Personally, I just look at the "waiting list" success letters with a kind of glass half empty kind of perspective.

OK it feels good to read that the DWP process indicates that you are capable of an office job but that is all it says. Only time can tell whether or not you can actually perform the role to spec.

Just keep looking, is all I can say. A waiting list is a waiting list. I had to have a hernia op a few years ago and was on the NHS waiting list. So I carried on with life, knowing there was a three to six month wait. Then about ten days or so after that letter, I was called to see if I could go under the knife the very next week!! I could have gone round, on edge, in pain, getting more and more depressed waiting for a date up to half a year later. But really my philosophy was I had put up with the pain for 4 years, what's another six months?

So that is my philosophy now. I got bills to pay and things I want to buy but that was before my redundancy and will probably be the same next year, whether I am working or not. So keep my head down keep looking, if I get a call from the waiting list guys with a start date, very nice. If not, nothing I can do about it.

Fact is, I could sit on my hands for up to a year hoping for a start or I could find another job meantime. Which is the better scenario? Hey even if I am working in a nursing home wiping old peoples butts I will still better off if the DWP do offer me a start date in 6 months time. Lets be honest JSA is a joke.

Also there are no guarantees. Most of these posts are for contracts and it seems, reading about these boards and at other places, that really this is all you can assume. Speaking to some people it seems that the "possibility of permanency" thing is bunkem. From what I can ascertain, it is a whole new recruitment exercise for permanent posts. So all this sitting about waiting for a start date, for up to 18 months time in some areas, is just to be unemployed again after an18 month post and maybe go through the whole process again lol

If nothing else though, the whole current batch recruitment exercises has been a very educational insight into a Civil Service process !!

I think they've all got sick of us because the HR number that I have got seems to have been disconnected!! Oh well...

Reebok, we both have the same recruitment officer. So far I do not think he has been very helpful, but perhaps that's because he is none the wiser about the whole process. Do you know what position you are on the waiting list? As far as I'm aware, everyone who has been successful has been put onto a waiting list whilst they wait for start dates to come through. I just feel disappointed because there was no mention of a waiting list on the job advert - was there? Did I miss it? Anyone who does get a successful waiting list letter, I would advise you to put off telling your family and friends until you get a start date! It's a bit embarrassing as I told my family that I have got a job and they keep asking me when I start :(

Thanks! I hope so too! My checks are completed, I received my CRB back last week. They have also got a copy of it - so at least I know that's out of the way! Samesamebutdifferent and Reebok, have you received your CRBs back?
