Im in the same boat, received my offer letter and told that they are carrying out pre-employment checks.

Rang to find out more information on when I would be starting but was told this is not known....

I have no idea if im on a waiting list or whether I will be starting when the checks are carried out. Im in a bit of a pickle as I need to advise my current employer so I can hand my notice in. Ive worked for the DWP but apparently this would not affect the checks.

What do I do!! Any advice would be much appreciated!

I still think some people have no idea of the scale of this recruitment!

Every district is running multiple exercises and thousands of posts are involved nationwide. Each district is like a mini DWP with it's own organisational structure developed over the years to meet the needs of that district after all the job cuts and efficiency savings - so no, there probably isn't a lot of consistency in people's experiences.

If some of the posters on here are successful, then they are going to have a very rude awaking when they start working for DWP - the air of 'I can do this much better than those doing it now' will soon be blown away when you finally realise the true situation and just how hard DWP staff work day in day out in difficult circumstances where the gateposts move regularly.

In some ways this thread is helpful, but in others it isn't as it seems to be fanning the flames of annoyance that wouldn't even exist if this thread didn't exist.

Lol, I think we do all know, or should do, about the size and scale. But actually I think this thread is very useful cos I bet Newcastle would be getting alot more calls without it. Eg, I have an idea of the CRB checking process from here that I would otherwise have had to ring up about. The hanging around not knowing is pretty stressful for we applicants.

I also appreciate the odd DWP bod popping on here with info.

retrocircles - my point exactly. i feel discriminated against as i did have the qualifications and experience that were stated in the job advert. i applied and ticked the box stating that i have a disability. that and the fact that i do have the qualifications/experience would equal that under the job interview guarantee scheme i should have been granted an interview. the fact that i did not get an interview says discrimination to me but then again maybe i am just being stupid and not reading right.

and the fact that i have applied under disability regulations does not make me a bad person, just making sure that i get treated in the same manner as non-disabled applicants, as i have been blatantly discriminated against in the past. believe me it is not a nice feeling to know that someone who is not as qualified as me has gotten a job simply because they are not disabled.

i have been applying for jobs for quite some time and have so far only had one interview and that was for the dwp, my previous employer, and i only left there because my husband was in the forces and he was posted overseas and we went as a family to make sure we were together as a family.

it feels that on this thread people have been very quick to judge and put me down, just helping to make me feel even more worthless in my measly efforts to try and get my family back on an even financial keel.

If / when you get a job offer just tell whoever calls you've got to work x weeks notice - no problem, we're used to it!

Well done on getting through - I know a lot of old staff (recruited under the 5 'O' levels, 2 'A' levels criteria) who've not been successful at the Competency based Interviews!

    Thank you, thats really useful.

Is my current employer likely to be contacted before I get to tell them? I would like to advise them before they are contacted for a reference just out of courtesy.

If your letter didn't mention a waiting list then I gather you are not on one. You will be among the first batch of those taken on based on available vacancies. As for when you will start, this thread should tell you that you just can't tell. Jfdi's post above will tell you the process. From what he/she said, when you are phoned by your regional manager you'll be able to negotiate a start date based on the notice you need to give your current employer.

Edit to add: oops...got beaten to it, lol.

I really don't think they do - some might yes, especially someone like yourself who has worked in the Civil Service before, but plenty don't seem to imho. And I don't think Newcastle or where ever you have applied to would be getting a lot more calls without this thread, as normally you don't chase an employer in this way about a job imho! You might chase things up if something hasn't happened by the date you were told, but otherwise you'd probably sit and worry or just get on with your life and wait imho.

I'm certainly not saying this thread isn't a good idea - it is fab - and letting off steam is fine, but this thread is clearly making some people even more worried about their application having read what other people are saying. I think the DWP people popping in is useful, but to a certain extent they can only say what is happening in their district and even that may have changed since some candidates originally applied as some districts have revamped and fine tuned the whole process.

Who ever said don't put all your eggs in the DWP basket is right. If it were me I'd be continuing to apply for jobs and when the time comes make a decision about any DWP offer.
