  • I don't think people realise the process behind the recruitment process.
    1) Person see an advert saying closing date for applications is say 23/03/09
    2) Person Applies by that date
    3) In the advert it states Numeracy Tests etc take place between say 30 March to 22 April 2009.
    4) Person attends tests between these dates. (You therefore should not expect to get an answer until 23 April at the earliest, i.e. after the last test date)
    5) Person finds out if successful in these tests
    6) If successful invited for an Competancy Test interview. At this interview your give proof of identity, fill in CRB Forms, HMRC forms (proof of paying tax in the last 3 years)
At this interview people are scored on their replies. Person gets a score rating. Put into a "league table". Until all interviews are conducted i.e all other applicates are scored, no letters are sent out. Once all scores are in the top "X" are sent letters saying you have successful, pre-recruitment checks are now being taking. The next band are put on a waiting list, & the lower band told they have been they have been unsuccessful
    7) The successful one's have to wait until the checks for CRB & HMRC come back
    8) Once these come back clear start date given

BTW Newcastle is put on the CRB form as this is Long Benton, Newcastle, DWP "HR" processing Centre.

Agencies are used to weed out initial applicants, arrange tests etc, because DWP are short staffed , hence the recruitment process.

Telephoning Newcastle for process does not really achieve anything, apart from making you feel frustrated. Hope this helps.

    Morning
Can someone help with my dilemma?
I received a successful and we are now doing pre-recruitment checks letter on Friday which is fantastic as I was made redundant in February, but on Tuesday I was also offered another job with the council which is only temporary .I have accepted the council job but do I still go or do I wait .If I do start at the council do I inform Newcastle that I’m now working as the letter said to contact them if anything had changed since filling in the application form. If the pre-recruitment checks are going to take a couple of months I would rather be working (and earning) than sitting at home.

I would take the council job and just wait for an offer from DWP, you can decide to take a position with DWP and leave the council, or stay at the council.

I have my checks letter but I am still job hunting, even if I get a job for a week then go to DWP I am better off financially.

Thought you'd like to know a little more about the pre recruitment checks being completed. Not sure if a couple of months is an exact estimate as in my case and i have had this confirmed by the Newcastle Office that the checks are actually completed with HM Inland Revenue to basically confirm you were working for your specified employer between your specified dates. Please note though these checks are only completed once they have your CRB Certificate. In my case I had to fax over a copy ( as they had mislaid the original!) on the Thursday morning and the checks were completed by 3.00pm on the following day!

For the record i have found the Newcastle office to be very helpful in my application ( aprt form losing the CRB cert of course! )

Charlotte, thanks again for a great post here!

Do you know at what point you get your test scores sent, and who's responsibilty it is to replace my lost CRB cert?

Hi all, I've read all of this thread with interest. Thanks to G Telford for the information quoted above.

I've gone through the application process as well and yesterday the postman delivered my interview result letter at long last!

I've been successful and the letter states that they are now doing pre-employment checks (no mention of a waiting list). Does this mean that I'm likely to be offered a start date in the near future or could I still be put on a waiting list for a period before being given a position?

I'm hoping that it won't be long before I get back to work and I sympathise with everyone that's still playing this crazy waiting game. Hopefully the overworked staff at DWP will manage to get the back of this process broken in the not too distant future.

  • hi
I think I will contact Newcastle and see if they can advise me I really don't want to mess the council about by taking a job for a couple of weeks then leaving and not only that they could offer the job to someone else.

Not wanting to appear a prat who hasn't read the information properly, I just wanted to say that I did read the details of the quoted post, I'm just wondering if someone can confirm the bit about different letters for different tiers following the interview.

I've read elsewhere in this thread that everyone goes on a waiting list and I'm hoping that this latest post is correct!

    regards,
    Derek

    Hi Derek
I'm in the same position having had a successful letter with no mention of a waiting list and I think once our pre-recuitment checks have been completed we will be offered a position and don't have to go on a waiting list. What area are you hoping for ?
