I wouldn't say that! There is a lot you can learn from life experience such as the responsibility of raising a family which you cannot get with a degree. At the end of the day they will offer you the job if they think you have what it takes to do the job well. Best of luck x

    I second that!

sorry i can't given an informed answer to this but i look forward to hearing from someone who does know.
so, 18 months has changed to 14 months and now even 12 months!
they constantly change the goal posts, the union want jobcentre plus to be an employer of perm not temp staff, i hope they push for that.

Your contract of work only commence when you sign your contract, which will include the length of the contract, salary, holiday entitlement, code of conduct and other bits. It will also have clauses such as notice period if contract is to be terminated.

Although the advertising stated 18 months, they can change it based on business need and even whilst employed they can change the terms of employment.

Of course this is not legal advise.

    Hi PontyEnd,

No, your not the only one not placed for 60535.

In my last posting ( 30/10/09 Pg 330 - 6596 ) I said I had a call from DWP, who confirmed that it would be very unlikely be placed in this round of vancancies.

Try ringing the number on the ltr dated 22/10/09 or emailing them, I got a reply in a few days.

If you need those details PM me and I will supply them.

Keep your chin up, I know it's hard I have been unemployed now for a year and when I original got the success ltr I thought I had won the jackpot.

Now I am looking for work again and fed up of being kicked in the teeth.

Hope you get GOOD news soon.:j

Hi, I did email the address on the letter but got no response so I rang them last Friday and was told that I was "looking good for a call very soon" or words to that effect. No real definite information other that they were up to "60 something" on the list.

Do you know your place on the merit list?

No, I think there's still quite a few out there still waiting for this one  Not heard anything since the letter regarding the freeze. Dunno whether I am still on the list or not, cos they sent me confirmation they had transferred by refs etc to another IRC. Where are you on the 'list'?

I found out Friday I was 92 I think, changed by about 13 from last time. Hopefully from being told I should get a call there shouldn't be problems but I've just got a feeling the longer it goes on. Especially as the letter we received states not all candidates will be placed so it's down to how many they need and how many people they place in a day.

I think if I don't hear anything next week then it isn't going to happen.
  • Further to my post yesterday, went for my interview at B&Q today. I THINK it went fairly well, but it is so difficult to tell. I would absolutely LOVE this job. Its part time for 6 months and then full time after that (permament). The pay is £9 an hour plus 20% discount at their stores, plus twice yearly bonuses, stacks of holidays, uniform (yes, even in the office!) and the most laid-back working environment I have ever seen. They are going to let me know by Monday. Sadly, they had dozens of people to interview (Dundee is an unemployment blackspot - mind you, where isnt these days?) so my chances of getting the job are a wee bit slim, to say the least. There were folk with Degrees being interviewed after me (I can read upside-down!) so one of them is bound to be chosen. All I have done for 18 years is bring up my kids, which is hardly in the same league. :o

You need to say to yourself that you are the best, the absolute best and that you will get this job, and B&Q will be lucky to have you!

I wouldn't be too concerned about people with degrees, most employers hire someone based on how well they will fit in and their personality. Of course intelligence is important but it is their first impression of you that will stay with them.

Best of luck with this Heather. I'm sure things will turn out. Trust me, a degree doesn't mean a lot these days, despite what we were all told at school. Life experience and a sensible head accounts for a lot more!!

I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you on this one. xxxx

Sorry to bother you further but it says requisite period of notice but later on in the contract it says less than 4 years service they only give 5 weeks notice. So if i have 8 months left on my contract they HAVE to give me 6 months?????

Is that info on the intranet anywhere??????

    Thanks so much

Sorry, the 6 month advice is wrong, the 6 months applies to permanent staff being given notice of redundancy. The DWP will endeavour to give fixed term contracts 3 months notice as to whether the contract will be renewed but it can be severed at any time with no notice.

Erm, well, the first impression wasn't exactly the best......it was POURING with rain and I arrived like a drowned rat, then I had forgotten to switch off my phone and my 82 year old mum (who has dementia) kept ringing to ask me if I had seen her purse.......I had to apologise, of course, but the whole thing was like an episode of Fawlty Towers. When I said I thought it went quite well, I was meaning the questions and my answers etc. Cripes!
  • I've sure you've done great Heather and if you thought the important bit went well, I'm sure you will be telling us you have a job very soon and at least they will remember you hehe! Fingers crossed.

Thanks for that! The man and woman interviewing took the whole ghastly "mum's purse" bit in their stride and told me about their own aged parents and then asked me if I was eligible for the Jobseekers work trial thing (which I am). They both gave me their mobile numbers in case there is anything I want to ask.

Yeah, don't imagine they will forget my interview in a hurry lol!!!!!:o

I know everyone is in this for a job but remember that this employer is funded throguh our taxes and as above they will employ to business need, I'm not saying they've handled this recruitment well, far from it, but at the end of the day none of us would want them to take permanent employees on only to pay them redundancy payments in a few years time. The business changes from day to day and the recruitment does (or tries to) move with it.

I truly wish everyone best of luck with DWP if they get a post or other employers if they don't.
