Yep three months sounds about right, they do take a while!!!

    Quite frustrating:mad:
Tony, have you had the call yet??? No? It's seriously taking the p*ss.
Had I known I was going to be on a waiting list, I'd never have spent my time even filling out the application!!!!

Hang in there! From what you've said you should get the call reasonably soon one way or another. DWP is notoriously slow. And, also, there's apparently a very high rejection / drop out rate with new starters. Which will partly be down to how long it takes them to get around to making job offers ... three months is a long time to wait, gives plenty of time for the most motivated people to find themselves an alternative role.

Heck, in my case even once (if: waiting to hear on a much better job) I start with DWP I'll keep my eyes open for appropriate roles in my preferred industry.

    Thanks for the support!!

I studied Media Studies for five years and I've been in Public Relations for just over two. Have to say, I enjoy it, but the money is not great and its a very macho-culture company!! It was the salary that attracted me to this position if Im honest.

I've been applying for jobs in Communications / Marketing since January as well as other jobs which have caught my eye. Had a good number of interviews, but always been beaten by someone with more experience (I'm just turned 25)

Again, I've been offered a job, but it's only £6 per hour. It'd let me get out and about (basically I'd be making cheese for a small local company and selling it at the likes of Farmers Markets!) sounds fun and right up my street (I'm a through and through country girl!) but it's not the type of job that can give me enough to reach my goals ie. be accepted for a mortgage etc or allow me to save up for a car quickly. I know these are material things, but still, we all have aspirations!

Best of luck. I really hope we start getting calls through soon!

are you an AO or an EO???
  • Tried phoning Dunfermline and Newcastle earlier, all to no avail. There is a distinct lack of "had the call" posts today! Has ANYONE heard anything? I have to sign on tomorrow, so will have yet another word with my Advisor as to whether or not he can approach anyone on my behalf via the phone. He is a very nice fellow and has only recently started at DWP himself. He told me that his checks took simply ages, so he knows what it is like.

Re: Primark - my eldest daughter has a part time job there and she says that they have quite good quality dress trousers and smart shirts just in. Trousers are £7 and shirts start at £3.50. The stock is nationwide, so wherever you are, they should be in stock.

I'm glad I posted here as I feel much less stressed/nervous now, really looking forward to the first day. Good luck to the people waiting, being unemployed helps obviously while you play the waiting game but I was volunteering at a charity and it was quite hard to tell them my time was up (I know it shouldn't but I liked working there and met new people everyday) so I guess I can slightly relate to what you're going through.

Thanks to everyone who've taken the time to share their useful insights, without a doubt it's helped a lot of people. :T

Another option re. clothes is if you or someone (close) you know has a Next or Littlewoods or similar account, you could get them to order it for you. That way, you have a month to raise the funds and even if you cant raise it, atleast you could give them a fraction back in monthly installments. I have suits etc from a previous job (i hope they still fit), but I know for shoes etc, I'll have to do it on credit as I dont have ANY money as it's all tied up in rent and electricty bills etc.
