Will you have travel expenses to pay out to get to work? Do you live with your parents or will you have bills/food to pay out? Don't worry too much about clothes, there are certain things you can't wear (jeans, trainers, logo tshirts), have a look in your Jobcentre you'll see that some people look a right state
True, true. I will ask them. Travel expense will be bus fares otherwise I'll have to walk 40 mins to the place which isn't that day but over 5 days it takes it's toll (I used to do this for college...). I might just walk it home and save some money there. As for living expenses, I pay my "living costs" to my dad as it's only fair he gets a return for providing me with a roof over my head.Good thing is I can freeze payment and pay them back next month which he seems fine with.
On the topic of clothes, I have light-weighted jeans which look like trousers so I'll probably wear them on the odd day.
As for the Primark suggestion Thylacine, last time I got something from there or Peacocks, the clothes didn't last long. They get all bubbly so you end up paying more to replace them and I don't know if they sell quality ones. I'll pop in one of the stores and check anyways, thanks.0 -
I'm not sure what your start date is but 40 minutes isn't a lot, I walk both ways and it takes me 30mins, its actually a good idea particularly on my way home, working in a Jobcentre can be quite stressful and you might find it helps you unwind and think the day over whilst you're walking, that way once you get home you can switch off from work and concentrate enjoying your evening, it works for me.
On the jeans front, its a risk if you wear what you are suggesting, as in all offices there are managers who get a bit of a power trip from telling people off for little things, you don't want ot get told off on your first week.... saying that if someone says something you could tell them you don't have any money to buy suitable clothes.
One pair of trousers from Primark, although not great quality is surely an option to be able to give a good impression, failing that you could borrow a pair of trousers.
I know you're probably nervous about starting but look for solutions not problems."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -

I find that clothes from primark and peacocks are ok but dont last all that long, however im sure one pair of smart trousers would do you til u get your first proper pay at which point u could replace themhope u get somethign sorted out xx

In my local office ive seen a couple of the men wear suits, but most of them wear smart trousers and nice shirt. some of them wear ties but not many! xx0 -

Hi - just a suggestion: if you're not too fussy about 2nd hand clothes, why not look at Charity shops? I got some virtually unworn Wallis trousers and a smart cardigan recently - an absolute bargain at less than £4 each. It's amazing what you can find.
I currently volunteer in a local charity shop and many of the donations we get are good quality, well-known brands like Next, Monsoon, M&S and the like that have hardly been touched!!!0 -

Yes your allowed, I actually think people should have to dress smarter in DWP but the existing dress code is hated and resented as it is (mostly by Ex BA/DSS staff who before the merger could pretty much wear what they liked), particularly it would be better in this time of recession with lots of professionals claiming benefits, it would put them a lot more at ease and make as look more like a professional organisation."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0
