l just had more or less same email. in my view if you go for an interview and get a letter saying well done, dont you presume you have job!!!!! dwp are waste of time.

i completely agree, the letter states successful and looking forward to working with u, how else are we supposed to interpret that, other than if we pass the checks we have a job

Having initially emailed Yvette Cooper (the Work and Pensions Secretary) about what's been going on, I've had an email back from someone at the DWP that my original email was obviously forwarded to. It is ultimately personal correspondence so I won't go into too much detail on it but the gist is:

    - the letter doesn't offer you a job
    - when the letters were sent out we believed the jobs were there for all "successful" candidates
    - each "business" is now reviewing its staffing levels and will report back at the end of October at the latest
    - "successful" candidates will then be contacted

I've asked for information about the London roles that are still being advertised, so it'll be interesting to see if applicants for those will come up against the same situation.
  • yeah it is strange that they are still advertising and infact interviewing but i think its only parts of London business that is not frozen, i just hope no1 else has to go through what we have been through, or at least reads this forum before leaving or turning down a job

I'm sure this might not go down too well, but it's meant with the best of intentions....

I think what's really happened here is that things have changed in the middle of a huge recruitment exercise. DWP were intending to recruit almost (more than?) 10,000 staff. That is a huge number of people for anyone to recruit, no matter how well organised they might or might not be. The numbers involved have also led, inevitably, to large numbers of disappointed people.

Over the period of this recruitment, things have changed in the economy. For any other prospective employer it might have been the loss of a contract, bankruptcy, a merger, a stock market fall, a takeover bid or any number of things and they would have changed their recruitment too.

It's a real shame that people have had their hopes raised, but the DWP are funded by taxpayers, and all the parties are talking about cuts, so it would be rather odd for them to over-recruit and then end up spending money that was not available.

My view is that those people waiting on a posting date should consider looking for any other work - a job offer without a start date doesn't actually form any valid contract - they could just say "you can start on 01/04/2025".

Good luck to anyone "waiting" for a DWP job in either getting a DWP job if it materialises, or getting another job elsewhere. I'm not sure there's any point in raking over the coals of what's gone on though; it might be better to move on and concentrate on action that might now lead to better chances of employment.
