Ha, something like that, yeah.

But if there's 300 people with success letters for this area and Pablo was told that at number 59 on the list he probably wont be placed then there's gonna be quite a lot of angry people waiting for a call that will never come.

A lot of people won't even have found this site and will undoubtedly be clueless and pulling their hair out pressing 0191 redial!

I'd like to make it very clear that from my experience Merit List in no way means you're safe.

I'm 59th and have been told I won't be posted despite being told earlier I would.

And that is cutting a very long story short!!

That is the short story. Three weeks ago there were 300 to be posted. Now there is not even a 1/6 of that.

Anyway. I'm off to work. Think I will casually mention to my boss that I never said I was leaving, this "job" he thinks I have got he has dreamt up himself and the reference he got through for me isn't me at all :rotfl:and I'm staying!
  • Well, it's the civil service. They tend to do what they like regardless of whoever is in power.

I think that's a slightly naive view, a view based on watching Yes Minister or the view of someone determined to believe in Labour come what may.

I worked for the Civil Service for years and they WOULD like to do whatever they want but government ministers keep dictating to them.

I worked for HMRC and they shed 6000 jobs while I was there. The Department fought tooth and nail to stop it as they thought it would increase tax fraud and lead to immigration issues but John Major's government were adamant that public spending had to reduce and there was a Gulf War to fund. The cuts were made across a number of departments and there is no way the Civil Service would do that unless it was told to. Likewise, recruiting 10,000 staff is hardly likely to be an undertaking without direct Cabinet input.

Actually it's based on personal experience - I'm slightly too young to remember Yes Minister, and I don't see any real difference between Labour or Conservative - they're both right wing in my opinion ;)

Yes, the government may decide to recruit or cut jobs, but the procedures used are not necessarily dictated by government. That's down to the civil service a lot of the time, and it's why I said that it does not matter who is in power.

Yep, it sure is! do you know the area well?

    Thank you!

I did the assessment online, and had my interview at the Raddison SAS hotel in Leeds on the 6th July - IRC60540 (EO)

Did you ask what position you are on the merit list, and how many jobs are available?

When did you have your interview?

Try not to be tearful hun, I felt like that on Monday, and after a 'little' chasing up, I got the call!

Thank you Deejay, I didn't realise the significance if the merit list until I joined this forum, i didn't ask about placings as I was just told it was a pause and not a freeze whilst I presume a headcount is done to see how many are needed. I interviewed late July in Halifax. I was told they hadn't started to post for my IRC yet, so don't know whether this is good or bad. You are our glimmer of hope at the moment. My employer has asked for my notice! in fact insisted two weeks ago. I am just holding on!

Well the merit list didn't have any significance to me as some people lower down the list were posted first due to the clerical error

I've not heard of anyone yet to be posted in Halifax, so maybe that's a good thing?! - I hope so anyway! i'll keep everything crossed that you hear some news soon. Its so frustrating, I know exactly what your going through.

Please, whatever you do though..... DO NOT HAND YOUR NOTICE IN!!!! If you haven't given anything in writing, they cant make you leave. We dont know how long this freeze/pause (??) is going to last and rumour has it, its looking to be late Oct!?

Good luck to you and everyone still waiting.

Just called Employee Services Resourcing regarding IRC61569.

Well, actually it wasn't that simple. I called about three different numbers before ringing the complaints number provided a couple of posts ago. Couldn't get through to Louise Perry, but did speak to someone in her department.

    Found out the following: -

    1. There is a 'freeze' on allocating start dates. Same as discussed previously, they have recruited a lot of people recently and they are inundated - they are reviewing their available vacancies.

    2. I am roughly 40th on a merit list of 150 people. As I can only work in one area (I live in rural Suffolk and do not drive), it is likely that they will not be able to offer me a start date as they take people from higher up the merit list first, and it isn't clear whether there are enough vacancies.

    3. Even if there is a vacancy for me, due to the freeze it is unlikely that I will get a start date for at least 6 weeks. At best.

Well done on getting all that information. That's the IRC I needed too and they won't tell me anything of any use.

I'll be raising hell over it - emailed various MPs tonight - until I get bored and give in. Since I'm not getting a sniff of anything else I'll keep going for a while. At the very least we ALL need to demand that this practice of sending out "success" letters before deciding if the jobs actually exist must end now. People shouldn't be put through this.

I'm resigned to not having a job now. If I eventually get the call it'll be great, but I'd be extremely surprised.
  • I've just had a phone call from a lady in Dunfermline confirming that there is a freeze on the EO post I applied for back in June.

I had the tests / interview in July and success letter 3 days later confirming 12 month waiting list although I've also been told I'm on the Merit list.

I had a phone call about 5 weeks ago asking me my preference of job centre from 5 (2 in Dundee, Forfar, Arbroath and Montrose) and I should get a call within 2 weeks with a start date.

First contact since then was today confirming what was said about there being a review of the recruitment and it's unlikely anyone will be getting placed before the end of October when the situation will be looked at again. She also added there is no guarantees that there will be postings after that date and advised me to look elsewhere if I wanted a job.

She was lovely and I really felt sorry for her having to be the bearer of bad news but I'm sure she had a few calls to make, but was going it to keep everyone on her lists updated.

This might also affect heathertheblether and mandie2106 as I notice they are round the same area as me.

Still got my fingers crossed though and at least I'm not going out worried about missing the call and up to now I do still have a job, albeit part time so I am greatful for that.

Fingers crossed for everyone that we do still get jobs out of this in the future.

    Hey there Joyce!

Thanks for posting the above. I have decided that the DWP is a lost cause jobwise as far as I am concerned. Have started applying for every job in my area that I think I can do in the hope that I will get SOMETHING before xmas. Thing is that I havent worked for a number of years due to bringing up my family and now I am finding that at 48 I am "too old" for many positions. Still, I am a great believer in that whats for you wont go by you. Apart from the DWP ha! ha!:rotfl:

  • Do you know if they have posted any one from ICR61569? If not the whole thing has been bloody pointless from the the beginning? I could understand if they have already posted some people and now find that they don't need as many as they believed before hand. Otherwise what was the point of all this?

All I know is that my position on the merit list hasn't changed. The natural conclusion drawn is that nobody has been taken on.
