My refs were not contacted either. Reading on here they seem to use other methods to check your employment history. This is good as my old job did not give references and my line manager was sacked a few months ago. Oh and the same advice to look for other jobs too.

Yeah I think that's because previous employers are not allowed to give bad references so it's pointless. It's probably more about verifying your right to work in the UK. As there's a 6 month probation period, they can determine your suitability then. Thinking about the references, did they ask you for employment refs, because on my form we were told not to use employers, but people who knew us on a personal basis. I never quite understood the reasoning behind that as one would hardly give details of someone who would say 'oh she is cr*p. Never buys her round' etc. (Not that that is true of me)

AArghh...how I wait for 'the phone call'. My landline is being plagued with spam callers atm. I usually never answer it as I have never given the number to anyone...apart from DWP, for completeness. Wish I'd just stuck to the mobile so I could keep the landline unplugged and ignored.

Yes I had to give two referees who knew me personally and could vouch for what I had been doing for the last 3 years and also the details of my previous employer. Neither of the referees have been contacted. So I guess they must have checked in other ways?
  • Does anyone have the number for newcastle? I have to update my ref's details as he has just moved house but I keep getting passed on with the number thats on the letter. I got my 'succesful' letter on the 15th, so just trying to keep on top of things and make sure it runs smoothly.

I had to give two personal references and both of them were contacted before I was offered my position (EO).

Well I spoke to newcastle today and apparently my CRB and HMRC checks are now complete and my record is marked as checks complete. I was told that I should hear something very soon but to be a little patient as the department I am going to might want so many starters at the same time for training courses etc.

Your right, I think I will show up just like that. Thank you. Ill try to reach them tomorrow although it's a Bank holiday you never know. It' s so frustrating, adds to the stress of the first day. I wish I knew if Im the only new start on that day. The JC is in Leicester.

So how was your first day? Was everything ok despite the lack of confirmation letter?

I started today too. I'm not sure anyone actually knows what I'm supposed to be doing so I just sat with someone and observed (probably a good job as I'd had about three hours sleep and was knackered). All seems fairly straightforward once you know what to do and when in terms of the computer system. Goodness knows what I'll be doing tomorrow - the person who does the actual training is off this week.
  • which job??

i had a call from the job centre i am starting at yesterday and the lady told me I have a choice of jobs, even though I applied for Personal Advisor...She said that it's absolutely fine if I wanted to be a Personal Advisor, but there is another opportunity available if I was interested...this being an Executive Officer....

    executive officer duties.....
Carry out interviews with customers seeking work, helping them to identify realistic job goals and the steps required to overcome barriers to them finding work. Work with colleagues and Jobcentre Plus partners to ensure customers get the support they need to gain employment Lead a team of people who conduct discussions with customers to review their efforts to find work, answer enquiries, give advice and check customer information. Develop those staff and monitor their work to make sure the highest levels of customer service are maintained.
Manage the flow of customers through the Jobcentre, ensuring customers are signposted to the correct service. Monitor demand for services and direct staff to meet that demand ensuring customers are helped quickly and courteously All posts involve ongoing use of management information to monitor and improve personal/team performance.
    personal advisor duties......
Personal Advisers are required to act as a caseworker for individual Jobcentre Plus customers. They carry out diagnostic, pro-active work focused interviews to help customers identify a realistic course of action to gain or, move them closer, to sustainable employment. They identify barriers to employment and provide customers with appropriate help, support and advice and signpost them to the available services. They submit customers to vacancies, opportunities, New Deal and specialist help monitoring and reviewing progress at all times.

both EO grade, band c, exactly the same salary.....
now i'm confused....which one is best? which one do I take? which one would be more suited to me? I really dont know...I am going in to see her today to tell her my decision and this has kept me awake all night....
any help would be REALLY appreciated....
    thanks
