There is a maximum of £300 allocated to people on JSA for things like clothes, shoes etc, if you need them to get back to work. You have to actually have a job you have been offered, the job must be for longer than 3 months (i think).
You can apply for this funding no matter how long you have been on JSA ... it doesnt matter if you have been on it a week. There used to be a time limit but it has been changed. It is called Advisory Discretionary Fund and you have to arrange an Advisory Discretionary Fund interview with someone at your jobcentre and, as the name suggests, it is at their discretion whether they grant it to you or not. I think you also need to provide quotations for the items you wish to purchase.
You would be best asking your jobcentre about this "Advisory Discretionary Fund", as I have only been an EO for two weeks :D

Hiya cheers for that - very helpful to us!

What you mean by quotations? Like tel them what items you need and how much and how you will want to spend the money?

Is it for any job within DWP?

Have you yourself applied for this?

    Thanks again...

The funding is there for anyone claiming job seekers allowance. For example, I am told that one of the people in my jobcentre authorised the payment to be used for a customer to get their car through the MOT so they could use it to start a new job they had been offered.
I had heard that one of the employees in my jobcentre used the fund themselves to buy some clothes for starting work with us.
For quotations, I mean like if they need tools to enable them to take up a job offer then they need to get a quotation from the local tool place for the specific things they need. I guess it would be the same for clothes. I am sure they will not just hand you £100 so you can say you will buy clothes and then go and blow it on beer :D
I did not use this fund when I was offered my job at the DWP. I was not claiming JSA by then as I had come off JSA about six weeks before and was temping. I had clothes to wear anyway :)

Is it for any position within DWP?

I need a start dateeee! arggh!

Can I use the same CRB for when applying to other positions so things can speed up? Only thing is CRB is for a BDO position not jobcentre so...I was told might need different CRB for working on Jobcentreplus and Benefit Delivery Centre!?

    Help someone!

    Hows the job goingg?

The Advisory Discretionary Fund is nothing to do with working for dwp. It is available to anyone claiming JSA who has been offered a job and NEEDS money for clothes, tools etc. So the person earlier who was claiming JSA and had been offered a position with the dwp, could apply for advisory discretionary funding to buy clothes, although its discretionary so may not be granted.

I am not sure about your CRB question :)

My job is going fine! Glad to have a long weekend though but I am really enjoying it!

I am going to work in a benefit delivery centre and it was the same CRB forms I filled in when I went for an interview for the jobcentre. I don't think mine was any different?

The Advisers Discretionary fund is different to the Jobgrant. Some Jobcentres use an invoice system for specific shops to purchase the products rather than cash. I would recommend discussing with an adviser first rather than going in with quotes. It also has to be applied for before you start work and not after.

Yeah toffee163, that is the best thing to do. Go in and discuss your options with the jobcentre :)

Hi Molli and Hi to everyone else!

Well i have been in my position as an AO for one week now and like Molli, looking forward and enjoying my long weekend. Yes it is good too see things from the other side of the desk, the people at my branch are great. Courses are organised for the core skills required and these are readily available for you.

thought you'd like to know I was offered the ADF fund. This involves going to a locally nominated outlet choosing my items and then takeing the receipt back to the JC for verification. I had been signing since October 08 and had signed off over the Xmas period to take up a temp contract, I thought this would affect my ADF claim but apparently not! I would check with your local office with regards to the specific rules.

    cheers!

    Nice to hear!

Nominated outlet? do they choose for you or can you tell them where you need to go and pick items from?

You purchased the items then went back with the receipts and how did they pay for it? or you just got a receipt from a shop and came back with it and then purchased the items?

So before I sign off JSA - I should speak with my sign-on adviser well before I start work to consider the ADF fund?

    Thanks in advance
