I decided to chance it and go to my local branch with my online application etc . As I said, i don't drive, don't have a passport - I could provide none of documents for identity, just had more other letters etc with my address .
"You've have to get a passport" one said - "Do you want to pay for that?" I said.
All they could suggest was I got a letter from the tax office confirming my NI number along with my NI card (if I could ever find that!) and they "should " be alright if they cheked with the "help desk" - Little chance of all that before the deadline of a month to open the account now. Excuse the language, but I am quite angry about this, what really pisses me off me off as well is is that if I were on benefits or with a foreign passport - you don't even have to be working - there's no problem . but born here, lived here all my life, worked and tried to pay my way and yet I am excluded with more hoops to jump through.

To Barclays I still don't exist.

    Rant over.

I just got my 'bring ID to the branch' letter yesterday....... Not bad service seeing as I applied on the 19th of January!!
  • Received ID request from bank took it in said they couldn't verify my details

Told them I was a Woolwich customer as well lo and behold they found all my details but refused to give me new account as the offer had closed

    Any ideas

I phoned them yesterday to find out what was happening to my application. I got the 10 day email about 2 weeks ago but hadn't heard a thing.

They had my details and told me that my application had gone to 'local decision' I was told this is normally what happens to applications made by ex employees of barclays. Well, Im not, so not sure what happened there! Anyhowz he then said I should take my ID to a local branch and my account will be opened. I confirmed with him twice that I would still get the £100 offer account and the money. (made a note of his name and time called etc).

I asked him if I should wait for a letter or some confirmation by post before I take in my ID and he said no, i wouldn't be recieving anything by post. I'm not really sure whats going on, but if you haven't got a letter yet, maybe its worth phoning the 0500 number. Maybe they are hoping people wont bother following it up!

What's the offer got to do with opening an account?
You filled in an online application because you wanted to open a Barclays current account.
Doesn't the letter say take ID to branch to finalise the opening of the account?, the account already exists - just waiting for ID verification.

For anyone who has still heard nothing - I got my letter from Barclays today, just a form to sign and send back, no need to go into branch. Looks like there is still hope...
    Not even wrong
  • I got the letter requesting ID etc. I took it into the local branch on Saturday. However the personal banker told me she could not open the account there as I would not qualify for the £100. She took copies of all my ID and told me she would send it to the online banking team. I made sure she wrote what she had done on my letter and got her to stamp it with the branch stamp. I still have heard nothing though.

I just wish they would communicate a consistent message to the branches, as I guess I will at some point be calling the 0500 number and complaining.

I really am disappointed at the level of service offered...

I received my passcode, but never received any membership number or welcome pack or connect card. I have however now managed to get set up online with some ' help ' from the online banking telephone helpline.

I agree with several posters about the shocking communication, lack of security, and will most definitely be closing my acount as soon as Ive received my £100; not least after reading in the press today that Barclays are now penalising their credit card customers who pay their bills in full each month, by bringing forward their bill payment date in order to catch people out and land them with a £20 late payment charge!!!!!

Certainly more than frustrating for you but Barclays should find alternative evidence that is acceptable. You are not the only person in UK without passport and driving licence. Are you on electoral register-do you have notice of coding/assessment from the Inland Revenue which would show your NI no-do you have any utility bills/bank statements/credit card statements in your name? I would think that some of these might prove who you are - did they suggest these?
Grit your teeth and keep trying.

I suggested those. I brought utilty bills, mortgage statement, even a letter from the tax office about a rebate I received from 2004/5 - they are not acceptable for proof of ID - only for proof of address. Yes, i'm on the electoral roll. Not on their list. They have no Plan B.

    Computer says no.
