Has anyone started to stock up on basic foodstuffs etc in case they or their partners are made redundant?

I think I read somewhere that you were best to have enough dry/tinned foodstuffs in for up to 6 months (not so much frozen in case we start having power cuts).

Have just come across this thread whilst poking about :rotfl: .

Yes it is a good one. I rember when cans didn't carry a use by date. I wonder if they are really necessary. Can't hoard myself as it would alarm the wife but I know someone who has always done so.

I'm doing the opposite right now. The freezer needs defrosting, so I've spent the past few days using up the last of the odds and ends in there alongside any tinned and fresh stuff I had in.

With a bit of luck western civilisation won't come to an end tomorrow. I can't easily get to the shops til Saturday :o

Hoarding is a way of life with me - have lots of dried and tinned food in the house, along with UHT milk etc. Case of having to sometimes, in case the ferry doesn't sail and the supplies don't come in.....

We won't go hungry in this house ;)

Have to admit I have been buying in more tinned goods than usual, other stuff like rice, pasta, flour etc I always have the "in use" bag and 1 extra spare. Haven't bothered getting bottled water in because as we are a family of 5 we would need barrel loads and I can't face storing it all unless I really REALLY feel we are on the brink - besides we still have an old boiler with a huge water tank in the attic so if things got really desperate.....
We luckily have a coal fire in our lounge and a woodland nearby so heating/cooking should be ok. Candles? Hurrah! At last all those purchases while on a whim at Ikea have finally been justified!
  • wow.... although as myself and OH both work long hours we try to make sure we have lots of food in the house so we dont have to shop much in the week, i had not considered storing food for worse case scenarios! bit of a scary thread this one!
    MFW 2015 so far..... £1808.70

Big new mortgage from 2017

  • Apparently we are at any one time on average 9 meals from anarchy.... Don't forget under Gordon Mugabe-Brown we have become a net importer of food for the first time in the history of our country. With the pound falling out of bed imports will HAVE to rise in cost just when many are losing their jobs.

Control the food supply - control the people..... works in Zim so why not here. Once people get hungry though you don't think it will be long before there is civil unrest, then the reasons for CCTV, intercepting comms and 42 day detention will become apparent.

    Just join the dots.........

Well I am not one for hoarding, but I did feel to urge to stock up on the baked beans on offer in Morrisons the other week, just in case!

Anyone for beans on toast :D

    I'd love to join the dots but this quote;

"Don't forget under Gordon Mugabe-Brown we have become a net importer of food for the first time in the history of our country".

    is just complete rubbish.

The UK has had a trade deficit on food, feed and drink since at least 1960 and probably well before that.
    I wonder why we needed food rationing in WW2 - 1952 ?
