Would that be some kind of fishing reel? or perhaps part of a DIY appendectomy kit?Murphy was an optimist!!!0 -
We also have wind up merchants and people easily wound up round these parts. Perhaps, in wind up stakes we are rather better prepard than average?0

We bought a huge hamper of choccies from Thorntons in their pre-Christmas sale and still have half of them left. That should see us through for a bit.
My other half has coeliac disease (gluten-free diet) and so gets staples such as bread and pasta on prescription. He gets a supply monthly so if armageddon comes at the right point during the month we'll have a freezer full of gluten-free bread. Though even during armageddon I'm not sure I'd want to eat it.0 -
You can get wind up radios too0

I know. A friend of mine, now dead, had the idea long before they were available. Should have patented it.
That's why stuff doesn't get patented/invented, it's a heck of a long and expensive route between idea and article.
For years I've had a brilliant idea for blind people (about 30 years) .... and now there's some modern technology that'd take it closer to being very very easy to do.... but I won't do it as I don't have the muneh to get a prototype/patent .... it's just an idea.... and can now be done with an app I bet.0 -

Or stuff gets into the clutches of a large company, who say, "We'll pay to develop this with you" and it never sees the light of day. Stops competitors selling it, though.
I have a patented plant. It cost £4k to patent it, plus an annual admin fee. A very famous nursery company put the money up front, but they've never done much with it. The costs haven't even been covered.
And lest anyone says, "Typical British business!" it's owned by Americans nowadays.0 -

After that we're reliant on the rain water capture system...Now, we had the hose pumping that out for a few months solid last year, and the year before, and still we have not seen the bottom. It refills to the top each time, so we should be ok........if we can boil the water. I think in the medium term self providence for firewood would be a problem. We have a few dozen leylandii in the barn for next winter, and three oak trees; the willows would be no good at all, and any thing else too weedy or too young.RenovationMan wrote: »Blimey LiR, are you typing this with numb fingers in a cold house, or have you been at the cooking sherry!
