There does seem to be a lot of sugar in that allowance, mind if you think about it, all our food has sugar in now doesn't it? I mean tinned stuff etc.

And I don't think I could do without that special part of my 5-a-day, the bar of Cadburys :D

there were lots of tins of stuff about in the 1940s - I don't know, though, if the tins now have more sugar in than tins did then.

    I don't like choc, it's not one of my 5 a day (-:

anyone care to post a few mice, the cats are getting rather excited by all the talk of meeces in the attic, but prefer delivery rather than take away

Send 'em this way - my parents' house is home to too many mice, and there are lots of rats in the barns, as well.

Why on earth would you want to store tap water for Pete's sake!

On a prosaic level, if Thames Water are mending water mains, they sometimes turn the water off for a while. They did it to the block of flats we live in a couple of years ago, we had no water for 24 hours. they did warn us, so we stored some tap water, incl. in the bath for flushing the loos.

  • I just wanted to endorse this. How many people here know that, in Belgium (another monarchy and host to NATO and the EU), the government resigned on 19 December because of the row about the break-up of the stricken Fortis bank (a report by the Supreme Court found signs of political meddling to sway a court ruling on bailing out Fortis bank, a victim of the credit crunch). The King of the Belgians accepted the government's resignation but ordered it to stay on for the time being in a caretaker role until a new government was formed (which seems to have happened today).

I have seen/heard nil analysis of this, nor any "could it happen here" commentaries?

I've read quite a bit about it, on the BBC website, for example:

but most sensible people have 3, 6 or 12 months worth of savings don't they?

    Do they?

I think you will find it depends on the family situation.

For those who choose to have one main wage earner and the other stay at home to bring up the children, I would think a very low percentage of those would have any kind of decent savings at all! In todays day and age it must be very rare for families on one income to be able to cover everything and be able to save.
  • I have to say, this thread is the best ever on MSE. I've almost cried laughing, several times.

By the time I was going to read it, it was too long. But the 1st post alone, if they say storing 6 months worth of tinned food, I'd need an extension and would have to borrow against the equity in my home to do this. My house would reduce by, say at least 10% over the next 12 months, so for the sake of ensuring I've got food in, I'd have hit negative equity.
