Anyone getting stocked up on food etc just in case?

I've recently stocked up on pasta, rice and canned goods.
I'm not sure where this need to buy small amounts of everything comes from, It makes much more sense to buy pasta and rice in big sacks than small packets. It usually has at least a year before the best before date which is plenty of time to eat the food, plus it has the added advantage of not having to carry heavy shopping home every week.
In general with normal sized packages you can just use the tins or packets up as part of your normal eating pattern without having to worry about things going off or needing custom resealable storage. And you can pick up an extra tin/packet or two every time you do your normal shop to extend your larder gradually without financial stress, if that's an issue.
As another poster said there is absolutely no downside whatsoever in keeping a decent sized larder's worth of food. Means if there ever is some sort of problem you don't have to worry and you just eat the food anyway.--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -

All he said was that if he was made redundant he would look for another job. As opposed to going out and buying lots of rice. Which seems sensible.0 -

Well...one would normally buy the rice BEFORE getting the bullet/bomb drops/nuclear holocaust.
But I accept that one cannot plan for these events! In the mean time, are you interested in a Ford Mondeo? Been round the clock 10 times...yours for a bag of rice!0 -

The point is that you might not be able to find a job in the middle of a recession for goodness knows how long.
Having a store of food already paid for would help finances. There's really no downside to laying a few extra tins or packets of food in every time you go shopping and loads of possible upside.--

This is a bit of a pointless arguement isn't it really? Your statement is correct, but you can't deny the logic of looking for another job when you've just lost one!
I know everyone isn't the same, but we (Mrs Cleaver and I) live off one set of wages and save the other each month. So if one of us was made redundant we'd be okay, just not be able to save. However, I realise that isn't the case for all. But most sensible people have 3, 6 or 12 months worth of savings don't they? There's really no downside to laying a few extra tins or packets of food in every time you go shopping and loads of possible upside
If you saw the size of our kitchen you'd disagree! We used to live in a massive terraced house and we had a kitchen with cupboards everywhere we just couldn't fill. We'd slowly buy more and more food then once a year we'd have to invite people round and cook it all. When we moved to the city centre we went for a nice flat, but my one regret is that our kitchen is just too small, we literally have one cupboard for food.
So for us to stock pile I'd need to store it in the spare room. And Mrs Cleaver wouldn't be happy with that.0 -

I don't want to drag this thread on and on, but if I was in a situation where society colapsed both economically and socially, or there was nuclear attacks on my city, or complete and utter lawlessness all around me, I just can't see myself thinking, "Ahhh, thank Christ I've got 38lbs of rice in the spare room, everything will be okay..."But I accept that one cannot plan for these events!
