Of course losing £20 is not as bad as losing your job, but that is not the issue here.

Anything bad that happened to yourself, your family, your loved ones, could always be dismissed by finding an example of someone worse off.

People aren't being selfish by being unhappy that they have lost tens or hundreds of pounds by Zavvi's administrators refusal to accept the vouchers - that is their personal experience of this situation.
  • Its a bit like that farepac or whatever it was called going under. People sat on tv saying they couldn't even have a christmas dinner. Christmas is what you make it, having time together costs nothing well maybe a tenner for the meat and veg for lunch.

I would say one of the reasons vouchers have lasted so long is because over time it's been considered to look more 'common' or less 'exciting' than getting cash for a present.

There are certain advantages to getting a voucher. A few times in the past I have gotten my parents vouchers for restaurants because I thought it would be nice for them to eat out on occasion as they so rarely get around to it. They wouldn't accept money from me and if they did it would go into their savings account rather than on a meal out. I wouldn't have touched them this year though.

I just don't quite see the point of them. I'd rather give a present than a voucher. Doesn't mean I think I have more rights than anyone else, and I wouldn't have thought of vouchers as particularly risky. My point was more that I've not really ever thought about them at all.
